Good Morning!

Welcome to Barah Ministries…a Christian Church based in Mesa, AZ…my name is Pastor Rory Clark.  At Barah Ministries we are “pursuing the truth through the study of the Word of God.” We are committed to learn how to live our lives God’s way because we believe God’s way is the ONLY WAY.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

How Will the Lord Deal with the Jews?

Recently, a friend asked me an interesting question.  She has a friend who has been repeatedly unfaithful to his wife.  The wife has forgiven him again, and again, and again.  And her question was, “In situations like this, when do you decide that enough is enough?”

Pastors are often asked questions they have no right to answer.  I could run to the bible, look up a bunch of verses, throw them at the situation, and tell my friend to tell her friend that the wife has the right of remarriage because of his infidelity…whatever that means…that she doesn’t have to put up with that kind of behavior…I could tell him that God is going to punish him… that the Lord doesn’t take too kindly to adultery or division…all the things a self-righteous Pastor or a marriage counselor who dispenses human viewpoint might say.  But the truth is this…since I’m not in the situation, I don’t know how the husband or the wife ought to handle the situation.  Since I am not God, I don’t have the right to judge them or to give them advice… they have to work this out for themselves.  Outsiders can only interfere.  I can only say how God might handle a similar situation, then let their human volition take over.

I do know this…no matter how many times we are unfaithful to the Lord, He is ALWAYS FAITHFUL to us.  Second Timothy, Chapter 2, Verse 13…

SECOND TIMOTHY 2:13

If we are faithless, the Lord Jesus Christ remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.

I do know the Lord has this to say Peter about forgiveness in Matthew, Chapter 18, Verses 21 and 22…

MATTHEW 18:21

Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”

MATTHEW 18:22

Jesus said to Peter, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven!”

The Rabbinical teaching of the day recommended that a brother be forgiven three times.  Peter was being generous by offering seven times.  But the Lord’s forgiveness has no boundaries…He has forgiven all of His creatures in the past, for all of their sins…believers and unbelievers alike…and they stand forgiven forever.  The answer, seventy times seven, pointed directly to the Jews…who had seventy times seven years as God’s Chosen People.  Not only was the Lord giving Peter instruction, but also He was telling us how He deals with the Jews…forgiveness…over and over and over again in spite of their rejection of His Person and His Work on their behalf.

There is an expression that was popular among the World War Two generation…it was an expression used to communicate, “Wow!”  or “Can you believe it?”  The expression was, “Lord, have mercy!”  That’s what comes to mind when I think of the Lord’s approach to situations with His creatures, especially the Jews.  The Lord has mercy.

We have begun the overview of the next section of Paul’s letter to the believers at Rome…Romans, Chapters 9 to 11…and the whole section is designed to answer the question, “How Will the Lord Deal with the Jews?”  Well first of all, if we’re not Jewish, why should we even care how the Lord deals with the Jews?  The answer is simple…this is why we should care…Romans, Chapter 2, Verse 11…

ROMANS 2:11

For there is no partiality with God.

Since there is no partiality with God…since God treats all of His creatures the same, it is very instructive to us Gentiles how the Lord treats the Jews.  Because however the Lord treats the Jews, that’s exactly how He will treat us Gentiles.

Last week we asked, “Has the Lord abandoned the Jews?”  The Jews did not welcome their Messiah…in fact they rejected Him.  How did the Lord take the rejection?  Did He decide to abandon the Jews as well?  The answer is an emphatic NO!  The Lord Jesus Christ, the Sovereign God of the Universe, has not abandoned the Jews.  In fact, He would never consider abandoning us, especially when we abandon Him.  If you have someone in your life that reflects the Lord’s character in this way, you have a real friend.

Last week, we also asked, “What is the destiny of the Jews?”  In Romans, Chapter 9, Paul will make it clear that they have turned away from God.  In Romans, Chapter 10, Paul prays for the salvation of his “kinsmen in the flesh,” the Jews.  And in Romans, Chapter 11, he calls to mind the faithfulness of the Lord as Paul realizes that the Lord will deliver the Jews just as he has promised in His written Word.

So after studying Romans, Chapters 1 to 8, and seeing how the Lord deals in grace with the Gentiles, if our God is a God without partiality, we have to expect that God will deal with the Jews in grace as well.  The word that seems to describe the Lord’s attitude toward us when we abandon Him is mercy.  What is mercy?

MERCY

A kindness that is extended to an offender…a pardon…an attitude of unconditional love that defies logical explanation.

Our God is a God of mercy.  Welcome to a place where you can learn about our merciful God…the great I AM…the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful, Heavenly Father, for the privilege of studying Your absolute truth...the Word of God…

Father, we know that You are loving and forgiving and gracious…but we often forget that you are compassionate and merciful as well…thank you for dealing with our transgressions by granting pardon when we don’t deserve it…in other words, thank you for loving us at our best and at our worst, a thing we as humans are reluctant to do with each other…a thing we would do well to imitate…thank you for accepting us just the way we are…

Father, we know You allow us to be singed by the error of our iniquities… we know equally well that in Your mercy You deliver us from our foolishness…remind us to have faith in You and to always stand back and watch Your deliverance which You will always accomplish for us while we keep silent…

We ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...

Amen.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

How Will the Lord Deal with the Jews?

In mercy!

In fact, God is compassionate and merciful with all of His creatures.  There’s a beautiful picture of how God deals with his creatures in Ephesians, Chapter 2, Verses 1 to 10…

EPHESIANS 2:1

And you believers in Christ were spiritually dead in your trespasses and sins…

The spiritually dead are not able to communicate with the Living God…and it is Adam’s sin that separates us from God at physical birth.

EPHESIANS 2:2

…the state of sin in which you formerly walked (as a lifestyle) according to the course of this world, the curriculum according to the direction of Satan, the prince of the power of the air(waves), the instigator behind the spirit that is now working in the sons who are disobedient (unbelievers).

EPHESIANS 2:3

Among them we believers in Christ too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and the desires of the mind, and we were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest (unbelievers were).

As unbelievers we engaged in repetitious and intentional sinning as a lifestyle.  We followed the ways of the world, we were under the direction of Satan, thus we were actively rejecting God and everything associated with Him…we followed the promptings of “the flesh.”  When we were “children of wrath” we were in relationship with God’s wrath, not in relationship with Him.  What is God’s response to our rejection and our disobedience? Ephesians, Chapter 2, Verse 4…

EPHESIANS 2:4

BUT God the Father, BEING RICH IN MERCY, because of His great and unconditional love with which He loved us…

EPHESIANS 2:5

…even when we were spiritually dead in our transgressions (when we were at our most helpless and hopeless), made us spiritually alive together with Christ (by His grace you have been saved)…

The “BUT’S” of the Word of God are always so encouraging…because after God tells us how lousy our situation is, He then describes how He delivers us from the situation…with MERCY.  BUT…God the Father gives spiritual life to the dead…

EPHESIANS 2:6

…and God the Father raised us up with Christ (resurrecting us from among the spiritually dead ones), and (has positionally) seated us with Himself in the heavenly places as a result of our union with Christ Jesus…

For believers in Christ, our citizenship is now in heaven.  And why does God do such great things for the undeserving?

EPHESIANS 2:7

…so that in the ages to come, God the Father might demonstrate the surpassing nature of the glorious riches of His grace directed in kindness toward us who are in union with Christ Jesus.

In other words…when you act like everyone else acts when you’re dealing with people who deserve punishment…you’re not special.  But when you deal with them like God deals with them…in mercy…you inspire good conduct and gratitude from the undeserving.

EPHESIANS 2:8

For by grace you believers in Christ have been saved through faith…and that (grace and faith and salvation is) not of yourselves, it is the gift from God the Father…

EPHESIANS 2:9

…it is not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

In faith there is no self-merit…faith is each of us placing our confidence in the object of our faith, the Lord Jesus Christ, and not placing our confidence in ourselves to accomplish our own salvation.  Since no one can claim they saved themselves, there is no room for boasting.

EPHESIANS 2:10

For we believers in Christ are God the Father’s workmanship (we are masterpieces of art), created to be in union with Christ Jesus and designed for good works, which works God the Father prepared beforehand for us to do so that we would walk in these works (making them a lifestyle).

In mercy, God the Father makes sinners into saints…and He does it WHEN we are sinners, not after we have proven ourselves.  God the Father makes sinners spiritually alive…God the Father resurrects sinners who are now saints from the dead…God the Father seats sinners who are now saints at His right hand.  In other words…as sinners…when we deserved nothing but God the Father’s wrath…He was merciful toward us when we were at our worst.  Are you compassionate toward others when they are at their worst…or do you kick others when they are down?  Do you have mercy?

How will the Lord Jesus Christ deal with the Jews who have rejected Him as their Messiah?  With MERCY!  Let’s take a music break...and then we’ll see other instances of how the Lord deals with creatures that are down.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

How Will the Lord Deal with the Jews?

Welcome back!  How did God deal with angelic creatures?  With mercy!  He blessed them…then creatures rebelled…then the Lord delivered those who wanted deliverance.

HOW THE LORD DEALS WITH CREATURES

Blessing

Creature Rebellion

Deliverance

THE BLESSING

The biggest blessing is Creation…Genesis Chapter 1, Verse 1…

GENESIS 1:1

In the beginning the God (of creation…Jehovah Elohim…the Lord) created the heavens and the earth.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Creator…John, Chapter 1, Verse 3…

JOHN 1:3

All things came into being through Him (ho logos…the Lord…God the Son…who took on the form of true humanity as Jesus Christ), and apart from the Lord nothing came into being that has come into being.

The Lord Jesus Christ created angelic creatures…the beneha Elohim…the sons of God…and they witnessed the creation of the earth and the universe…Job, Chapter 38, Verses 1 to 7…

JOB 38:1

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said…

JOB 38:2

“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?”

Job has just accused God of being unfair.  God answers in a fury…

JOB 38:3

“Now gird up your loins like a man, and I will ask you, and you instruct Me!”

JOB 38:4

“Where were you when I (the Lord) laid the foundation of the earth?  Tell Me, if you have understanding…”

JOB 38:5

“Who set the earth’s measurements? Since you know.  Or who stretched the line on it?”

JOB 38:6

“On what were its bases sunk?  Or who laid its cornerstone…”

JOB 38:7

“…when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God (beneha Elohim) shouted for joy?”

God blessed us by creating us.

CREATURE REBELLION

Satan, the enemy of God led a rebellion against the Person he was designed to protect…and convinced all the angels to follow him in rebellion… he didn’t cause one third of the angels to fall…he caused all of them to fall… there is “no creature who is righteous…not even one!”  Ezekiel, Chapter 28, Verses 12 to 18…

EZEKIEL 28:12

“Son of man, take up a lamentation (a funeral song) over the king of Tyre and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “You (Satan) had the seal of perfection, you were full of wisdom and you were perfect in beauty.”

EZEKIEL 28:13

“You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering…the ruby, the topaz and the diamond…the beryl, the onyx and the jasper…the lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald…and the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, was in you.  On the day that you were created they were prepared by the Lord.”

EZEKIEL 28:14

“You were the anointed cherub who covers (the four winged officer angel…the bodyguard of the Lord), and I (the Lord) placed you there.  You were on the holy mountain of God (in the third heaven)…you walked in the midst of the stones of fire (the throne room of heaven).”

EZEKIEL 28:15

“You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created until unrighteousness was found in you (the sin of independence).”

EZEKIEL 28:16

“By the abundance of your trade (the trafficking of slander against the Lord) you were internally filled with violence, and you sinned…therefore I (the Lord) have cast you as profane from the mountain of God (you were kicked out of the third heaven).  And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire (you were kicked out of the throne room of heaven).”

EZEKIEL 28:17

“Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty (arrogance…pride)…you corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor (your beauty).  I cast you to the ground…I put you before kings, that they may see you.”

EZEKIEL 28:18

“By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade (the trafficking of slander against the Lord), you profaned your sanctuaries…”

Satan destroyed his own life by rejecting the blessings of the Lord.  He inspired the Jews to reject the Lord, and he inspires us to do the same.  And we follow!  We profane our own sanctuaries.

DELIVERANCE

The Lord gave all the angels a second chance…His compassions never cease…His mercy never fails…First Peter, Chapter 2, Verse 24…

FIRST PETER 2:24

…and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself bore our sins in His own body on the Cross, so that we might die to the sovereignty of sin and so that we might live to righteousness; for by the Lord’s wounds you were healed.

What is the pattern of the Lord’s dealings with all creatures?

HOW THE LORD DEALS WITH CREATURES

Blessing

Creature Rebellion

Deliverance

It’s the same pattern for the Lord’s dealings with the Jews.  He blessed them as the Chosen People of God…they rejected Him…but the Lord remains faithful to them.  He felt compassion for them and He gave them mercy.  Luke, Chapter 13, Verses 34 and 35…

LUKE 13:34

“O Jerusalem…Jerusalem…the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I (the Lord Jesus Christ) wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!”

LUKE 13:35

“Behold, your house is left by you desolate (abandoned)…and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord (as the Millennial Ruler)!’”

The Jews abandoned their Messiah…He did not abandon them…but He will come to them again in the future to rescue them from certain death…Acts, Chapter 15, Verses 13 to 18…

ACTS 15:13

After Paul and Barnabas had stopped speaking, James answered, saying, “Brethren, listen to me…”

ACTS 15:14

“Simeon has related how God first concerned Himself about taking from among the Gentiles a people for His name.”

ACTS 15:15

“With this the words of the Prophets agree, just as it is written…”

ACTS 15:16

“‘After these things I will return, and I will rebuild the tabernacle of David which has fallen, and I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it…’”

The Lord will come back for Israel…

ACTS 15:17

“‘So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by My name…’”

ACTS 15:18

“…says the Lord, who makes these things known from long ago.”

How will the Lord deal with the Jews?  With compassion…with mercy… just like He deals with us Gentiles.  He sent John the Baptist to call the Jews to salvation, as Zechariah the prophet describes, as quoted by Luke in Chapter 1, Verses 78 and 79…

LUKE 1:78

“…deliverance will be accomplished because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the Sunrise from on high will visit us…”

LUKE 1:79

“…to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

This deliverance includes the Jews.  Praise the Lord!

GOD WANTS YOU!

Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life

ACTS 16:30

“…the jailer asked, “Sirs (talking to Paul and Silas), what must I do to be saved?”

ACTS 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

ACTS 4:12

“And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given to mankind by which we must be saved (except the name of the Lord Jesus Christ).”

JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the apostle Thomas, the doubting one, “I am the way (to salvation), and (I am) the truth (the Word of God), and (I am) the (resurrection) life; no one comes to the Father but through believing in Me.”

ACTS 2:21

‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation will be saved.’
