If you’re a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, you’re a child of God, a part of God’s family.  The apostle John taught us that in John, Chapter 1, Verse 12…

 

JOHN 1:12

As many as received The Lord…God the Son (that’s the WHOSOEVER who believed in Him) … to them the Lord gave the right to become children of God the Father…to those who believe in Jesus’ name…

 

In today’s lesson, as we close our study of the gospel of John, Chapter 1, we’ll

see the Lord Jesus Christ assembling His evangelism family, those who would help Him spread the gospel of Jesus Christ worldwide.

Let’s hear some music!  What’s required to have a great relationship with family members?  The Lord teaches us what’s required in First Corinthians, Chapter 13, Verses 4 to 8…it’s UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.  Here’s how you know you’re doing it…

Unconditional love is patient…unconditional love is kind and it’s not jealous… unconditional love does not brag and is not arrogant…

We’re grateful to You Heavenly Father for providing us with the absolute truth of the Word of God…

 

Father…we come to today’s lesson presenting our bodies as living and holy sacrifices to You which is our spiritual service…worship…we’re grateful that You bought us with a price…You sent Your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to bear the penalty of our guilt by paying for our sins with His blood…we’re grateful that by following Your instructions to place our faith in Your Son’s Person and His work on the Cross that we are saved once and for all time…

LESSON PART ONE

 

As we close our study of the Gospel of John, Chapter 1, something should be apparent to you…we are learning about Jesus.  Jesus Christ is God, and the apostle John is going to prove it to us with his gospel.

KEY MESSAGES ABOUT JESUS IN JOHN CHAPTER 1

 

John, Chapter 1, Verse 1…

In the beginning was THE WORD (the Lord…God the Son) … and THE WORD was God.

 

Let there be no question in your mind…the most important Person in divine history is the Lord Jesus Christ…Jesus Christ is God…we can’t say it enough times.

KEY MESSAGES ABOUT JESUS IN JOHN CHAPTER 1

 

John, Chapter 1, Verse 14…

THE WORD (the Lord…God the Son) became flesh and lived among us…

 

We have a high priest in the Lord Jesus Christ who can sympathize with us because He was tempted just as we are…even more severely…yet He did not sin.  No one can say the Lord can’t relate to us.

 

KEY MESSAGES ABOUT JESUS IN JOHN CHAPTER 1

 

John, Chapter 1, Verse 4a…

In Him was THE LIFE…

 

First John, Chapter 5, Verse 12 says…

 

FIRST JOHN 5:12

He who has a relationship with the Son of God has THE LIFE (the resurrection life… eternal life) … he who does not have a relationship with the Son of God does not have THE LIFE (the resurrection life…eternal life).

 

Reflect on that for a moment.  The Lord has gifted believers in Christ with His life…eternal life.  You wouldn’t want to not have THE LIFE.

John, Chapter 1, Verse 4b and Verse 5a…

…the life was THE LIGHT of men…and THE LIGHT shines in the darkness…

 

When we have THE LIGHT, our eyes are wide open, looking for truth.

JOHN 1:7

John the Baptist came as a witness to testify about the Light so that all might believe in the Lord Jesus Christ through him.

…Jesus…the ONLY BEGOTTEN GOD…

John, Chapter 1, Verse 29…

Behold (Hark!) … THE LAMB OF GOD who takes away the sin of the world

 

Jesus is the Lamb “without spot or blemish,” qualified to pay for our sins because He Himself was sinless.

John, Chapter 1, Verse 34…

…this is THE SON OF GOD

 

The Lord is God the Son.  He is also Jesus…the Christ…the Messiah.  Our recognition of this is the first step to salvation.  It’s the awareness, after hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ, that there is a God and He reveals Himself in ways that make sense to human beings so we can be saved.

There were other words used to describe the Lord Jesus Christ from the Old Testament…from Abraham’s day…

El Shaddai (which means God Almighty)

There is little doubt about whom we are studying!  It’s Jesus…and each name used to describe Him teaches us something about Him.

 

Let’s hear the final passage of John, Chapter 1…Verses 35 to 51…and then we’ll study the passage verse-by-verse.

 

JOHN 1:35

Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples…

 

JOHN 1:36

…and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

 

 

JOHN 1:37

The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

 

JOHN 1:38

And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?”

 

JOHN 1:39

He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying…and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour (4PM).

 

JOHN 1:40

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

 

JOHN 1:41

He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means the Christ).

 

JOHN 1:42

He brought him to Jesus.  Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John…you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

 

JOHN 1:43

The next day He purposed to go into Galilee, and He found Philip.  And Jesus said to him, “Follow Me.”

 

JOHN 1:44

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.

 

JOHN 1:45

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

 

JOHN 1:46

Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

JOHN 1:47

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”

 

JOHN 1:48

Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

 

JOHN 1:49

Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God…You are the King of Israel.”

 

JOHN 1:50

Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

LESSON PART TWO

 

What you’ll see in this passage is evangelism in action.  What is evangelism?

 

EVANGELISM

The act of communicating the gospel of Jesus Christ to the members of a lost and dying world (unbelievers)…recounting the significance of the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…with the goal of encouraging others to place their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.

 

Now let’s study the final passage of John, Chapter 1 verse-by-verse beginning at John, Chapter 1, Verse 35…

 

JOHN 1:35

The next day John the Baptist was standing with two of his own disciples (Andrew and an unnamed disciple…probably the apostle John)…

 

This is the first two of the “FAB FIVE” that Jesus is bringing into the family the Lord called “the twelve.”  John, Chapter 1, Verse 36…

 

JOHN 1:36

…and John the Baptist looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold (Hark!  Hey look!) … (it’s) the Lamb of God!”

 

This “Lamb” is a metaphoric term used for Jesus, both in the Old Testament and the New Testament…as in First Peter, Chapter 1, Verses 18 and 19…

 

FIRST PETER 1:18

…you believers in Christ were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers (the lifestyle as unbelievers)…

 

FIRST PETER 1:19

…but you were redeemed with the precious blood of a Lamb unblemished and spotless…the blood of Christ.

 

John, Chapter 1, Verses 37 to 39…

 

 

JOHN 1:37

John the Baptist’s two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

 

JOHN 1:38

As Jesus turned and saw them following, He said to them, “What do you want?” They said to Jesus, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher) … where are You staying?”

 

JOHN 1:39

Jesus said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where Jesus was staying and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour (4:00 PM).

 

An invitation.

 

This is the beginning of evangelism of the Lord’s evangelism.  “Come and see.” An invitation.  The two disciples (followers…technical students) stayed with the Lord that night, and the conversation was not about the World Cup Soccer matches!  The Lord was telling them about how to get into the kingdom of heaven.  They heard the gospel of Jesus Christ from the Lord Himself.

 

John, Chapter 1, Verses 40 to 42…

 

JOHN 1:40

One of the two who heard John the Baptist speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother (the other was likely John, the son of Zebedee, the author of this gospel).

 

JOHN 1:41

Andrew found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah (which translated means the Christ)”.

 

JOHN 1:42

Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at Simon and said, “You are Simon the son of John…you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

 

Evangelism.  Andrew carried the “good news,” the gospel of Jesus Christ, to one of his own family members.  Evangelism begins at home.  It’s called “household evangelism.”  You share the gospel of Jesus Christ with your own family first, then with your friends, then with your neighbors.  Are you?

 

I’m convinced God always puts a person in the family who can lead others to Christ.  What this person presents, the gospel of Jesus Christ, will be accepted or rejected, but it WILL be presented.  Is that you in your family?

 

We can bring to our families The Gospel of Jesus Christ and to The Word of God,

or we can bring them religion…a false gospel and false doctrines.

 

John, Chapter 1, Verse 43…

 

JOHN 1:43

The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee.   Finding Philip, Jesus said to him, “Follow Me.”

 

Philip is probably the only disciple who got direct evangelism from the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

 

John, Chapter 1, Verses 44 to 46…

 

JOHN 1:44

Now Philip (like Andrew and Simon Peter) was from Bethsaida.

 

JOHN 1:45

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the One of whom Moses in the Mosaic Law wrote and also the One the Prophets wrote about—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

 

JOHN 1:46

Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?”  Philip said to Nathanael, “Come and see.”

 

An invitation.  Nathanael rejected the invitation at first.  He did what I did when someone told me about Deacon Denny.  A friend said, “I know a guy who’d be great for your ministry.  He went to the University of Iowa.  His name is Denny Goodall.”  I said, “Can any good thing come out of Iowa City?”

 

The Lord loved Nathanael’s candor.  John, Chapter 1, Verse 47…

JOHN 1:47

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, Jesus said to Nathanael, “Behold, an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!”

 

To evangelize, the person you are evangelizing to has to think you are credible.  The Lord presented His credential of omniscience.  The Lord knows all that is knowable.

 

John, Chapter 1, Verse 48…

 

JOHN 1:48

Nathanael said to Jesus, “How do You know me?”  Jesus answered and said to him, “I saw you before Philip called you when you were under the fig tree.”

 

In John, Chapter 1, Verse 49…acceptance…recognition.

 

JOHN 1:49

Nathanael said to Jesus, “Rabbi…You are the Son of God…You are the King of Israel.”

 

JOHN 1:50

Jesus said to Nathanael, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

 

JOHN 1:51

Jesus said to Nathanael, “Truly, truly, I say to all of you…all of you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

 

The Chief Executive Officer of evangelism is God the Holy Spirit.  Here’s what the Lord said about Him in John, Chapter 16, Verses 8 to 11…

 

JOHN 16:8

And God the Holy Spirit…when He comes…will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment…

 

JOHN 16:9

…concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me…

 

JOHN 16:10

…and concerning righteousness, because I go to God the Father and you no longer see Me…

 

JOHN 16:11

…and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

 

Said another way, you were born a sinner and you need a Savior…absolute righteousness is the admission ticket to heaven and you don’t have it…if you close your eyes in this life without it, there is a Great White Throne Judgment for all unbelievers.

 

For those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation…those who have invested their faith in Him…there is the Judgment Seat of Christ…the judgement of rewards in heaven.

 

Evangelism is a duty of believers in Christ.  The Lord wants us to share the “good news” with others.  So…a few tips…

Let people see your relationship with Christ through your life.

Let God the Holy Spirit do His job.  You present the information to plant the seed.  God the Holy Spirit harvests the crop.  In other words, you invite.  “Come and see” is an invitation.  The Holy Spirit is responsible for conviction.

Get to know the Lord Jesus Christ yourself through the study of the Word of God and you’ll have no trouble talking about Him.

 

There is nothing finer than sharing the gospel message with someone and then seeing the fruit that blossoms when they believe.

 

 

 

National Football League (NFL) Hall of Famer Gales Sayers (a Chicago Bear) wrote an autobiography called I AM THIRD.  In it, Sayers said, “I am first…others are second…I am third.”  The Lord agrees!

 

Evangelism takes unconditional love.  Here’s what the Lord has to say about it in John, Chapter 13, Verses 34 and 35…

 

JOHN 13:34

“A new commandment I (the Lord Jesus Christ) give to all of you, that all of you love one another unconditionally, even as I have loved you unconditionally, that you also love one another unconditionally.”

 

JOHN 13:35

“By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have unconditional love for one another.”

 

Always be on the lookout for unbelievers to whom you can show unconditional love through evangelism.

 

THE GOSPEL MESSAGE

The Good News of Jesus Christ’s Salvation Offer to the Human Race

 

The final ten minutes of this lesson could be the ten most important minutes of your life.  You’ll be introduced to the good news concerning how you can spend all eternity in heaven when you close your eyes in this life.  We want you to know

that…

 

GOD WANTS YOU!

He Wants You Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life

 

…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.

 

Even if you don’t believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, you matter to God.  The Lord’s enemies matter to Him as much or more than His friends matter to Him.  That’s unconditional love!  The Lord created you and He wants the best for you.

 

While sharing this truth recently, a friend asked, “How do I get right with God?”

When we are born, we are not right with God.  Everyone is born in a state of unrighteousness…physically alive and spiritually dead as ungodly, unrighteous unbelievers in God’s eyes.  We were born sinners and we need a Savior.

 

It’s not our fault we were born this way, BUT IT IS OUR CIRCUMSTANCE.

 

In First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22 the Bible says…

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22a

For all in union with Adam at physical birth (and that is every human being who comes to earth) are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…

 

To God’s enemy, Satan…the ruler of this world…you don’t matter at all.  First Peter, Chapter 5, Verse 8 says…

 

FIRST PETER 5:8

Be of sober spirit…be on the alert! Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

 

You are the “someone” on Satan’s list.  Satan does not want you to be right with God.  He’s hasn’t been right with God since the day he declared God to be his enemy.  Here’s what the Lord says about that fateful day when Satan voluntarily gave up his privileged position in the Lord’s kingdom...Ezekiel, Chapter 28, Verse 15…

 

EZEKIEL 28:15

“You (Satan) were blameless in your ways from the day you were created until unrighteousness was found in you.”

 

Satan sinned, and now he wants followers.  He doesn’t want you to be with God in heaven when you close your eyes in this life.  He wants you to be with him in the Lake of Fire, and he wants you so badly he sends false teachers with false teachings to deceive you.  In Matthew, Chapter 7, Verse 15 the Lord warns us…

 

MATTHEW 7:15

“Beware of the false teachers who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but

inwardly are ravenous wolves.”

 

A ravenous animal has an insatiable desire to tear you apart.  Ravenous teachers

pretend to be for you, yet they want you to be twice the sons of hell that they are.

 

This gospel message offers GOOD NEWS concerning how to get right with God.  John, Chapter 3, Verses 16 and 17 reveal what God wants for you…

 

JOHN 3:16

“God the Father loved the world unconditionally…and He loved the world so much…that He gave His uniquely born Son (the God-man…the Lord Jesus…to be crucified on a Cross) … so that WHOSOEVER believes in Him shall not perish, but has eternal life.”

 

JOHN 3:17

For God the Father did not send God the Son (the Lord) into the world to judge the world…but the Father sent the Son into the world that the world might be saved through Him.

 

God wants you to respond positively to the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ so you can be right with Him.

 

Who is this God who saves you?  The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3

For I (the apostle Paul) delivered to all of you as of primary importance the gospel

message I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4

…and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

 

Getting right with God is easy.  There is no work involved.  Anyone who says you have work to get right with God is a false teacher giving you a false gospel message.  Romans, Chapter 11, Verse 6 says you don’t have to work to be saved…

 

ROMANS 11:6

…if salvation is by grace (a free gift from God) … and of course it is…it is no longer on the basis of your works…otherwise, grace (as a free gift) is no longer grace (it is not free).

Romans, Chapter 4, Verse 4 says you CAN'T work for salvation…

 

ROMANS 4:4

Now to the one who works for salvation, his wage for his work is not credited to

his account as a favor from the grace of God, but his wage is credited as what is

due for the work.

 

Your hardest work is not perfect enough to get you right with God.  So relax!  You can get to heaven free of charge and free of work when you close your eyes in this life.  Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31 says…

 

ACTS 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

 

John, Chapter 3, Verse 36 both warns you and invites you…

 

JOHN 3:36

“He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”

 

You have a choice.

 

You can spend eternity with God’s enemy, Satan, in the Lake of Fire…OR…you can have the free gift of eternal life right this minute!  RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT, RIGHT NOW, RIGHT THIS MOMENT…God can make you right with Him.  You can tell God the Father that you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and that is the moment of eternal life for you.

 

Romans, Chapter 10, Verses 9 and 10 encourages you…

 

ROMANS 10:9

…if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord (that He is God) … and if you

believe in your heart that God the Father raised Him from the dead…you will be

saved…

 

ROMANS 10:10

…for with the heart a person believes…resulting in the imputation of absolute

righteousness by God (your admission ticket to heaven) … and with the mouth a

person confesses (admitting faith in Christ alone) resulting in salvation.

 

You are right with God the moment He gifts you with His salvation and His righteousness.

 

There is a consequence for rejecting the salvation and the righteousness gift from the Lord Jesus Christ.  In Matthew, Chapter 8, Verse 12 the Lord says…

 

MATTHEW 8:12

“…the sons of (Satan’s) kingdom…(unbelievers)…will be cast out into the outer darkness (The Lake of Fire)…and in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

 

Many parents are false teachers leading their children to an eternity in the Lake of Fire.  Do you want to know if you’re a good parent?  Just ask yourself a simple question.  Are you influencing your children to get right with God by having a relationship with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Sovereign God of the

Universe?

 

He is the ONLY WAY to get to heaven according to John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…

 

JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation)…and I

am the truth (through the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Word of God)…and I am the resurrection life…and no one comes to God the Father in heaven but through believing in Me.”

 

You are either right with God or you aren’t.

 

There’s no time to waste.  GOD WANTS YOU!  If you want to be right with God, simply believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved!  Take His word for it concerning what it takes to be saved, and the resurrection life is yours free of charge!  You’ll be right with God for all eternity.

COLOSSIANS 3:12a

So…as those who are the chosen ones of God the Father (selected out for privileges…saved…and predestined) … made saints (holy ones) … and selected as divinely loved ones…you believers in Christ need to put on, as if it is your spiritual clothing, a heart of compassion (tenderness toward family members) …

 

COLOSSIANS 3:12b

…put on kindness (a sweet disposition) … put on humility (the chief characteristic of Jesus Christ) … and gentleness…and patience (self-restraint when wronged with no desire to retaliate)…

 

COLOSSIANS 3:13

…bearing with one another (consistently overlooking faults) … forgiving each

other (making room for differences of opinion) … and whoever has a complaint against anyone (especially family members)…just as the Lord forgave you…so also should you forgive.

…thank you for showing us how Your Son built a family through evangelism…He gave men invitations and let their free will take over from there…thank you for encouraging us to evangelize…to family members first, then to friends and neighbors…give us the courage to give others in our periphery the greatest gift that can be given…the “good news” of the gospel of Jesus Christ…

 

…put us in a position to share the gospel at every opportunity…

 

…we ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.
