How Do I Pray for My Enemies When I Don’t Want To?

 

LESSON INTRODUCTION

 

While teaching the Word of God for two years more than a quarter century, and teaching about prayer several times, I’ve never specifically taught about praying for enemies.  Hopefully today’s lesson is as big a treat in the hearing as it was in the writing.  Have you ever heard a lesson about praying for your enemies?

 

In Matthew, Chapter 5, Verses 43 and 44 the Lord Jesus Christ says…

 

MATTHEW 5:43

“You have heard it said, ‘You shall love your neighbor unconditionally and hate your enemy.’”

 

MATTHEW 5:44

“But I (the Lord Jesus Christ) say to all of you…love your enemies unconditionally (as well) … and pray for those who persecute you…”

 

In today’s lesson we’ll learn how the Lord’s wants us to handle our enemies, and what He’ll really teach us is to imitate how He handles His enemies.

Let us pray...

 

We’re grateful to You Heavenly Father for providing us with the absolute truth of the Word of God…

 

Father…Your plan and is the exact opposite of what we are taught in the world… nothing that makes sense about loving our enemies unconditionally and praying for them…yet that’s what You do…and that’s what You want us to do…thank you for teaching us to be different…thank you for allowing us to reflect unconditional love to others, even when we don’t want to, through the divine power of God the Holy Spirit…

 

…Father, help us be honest with ourselves…help us identify our enemies…and

help us assess the effectiveness of our approach to our enemies so we act as a total reflection of You…

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

How Do I Pray for My Enemies When I Don’t Want To?

 

LESSON PART ONE

 

On the day He was crucified unjustly, here are a few things the Lord Jesus Christ experienced.  John, Chapter 19, Verse 1…

 

JOHN 19:1

Pontius Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.

 

When someone is “scourged” they are beaten with a whip with metal attached to the end of the whip.  Jesus got thirty-nine lashes.  John, Chapter 19, Verses 2 and 3…

 

JOHN 19:2

And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on Jesus’ head, and they put a purple robe on Him…

 

JOHN 19:3

…and they came up to Him and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and gave Him slaps in the face.

 

If you’re wondering about the crown of thorns, I have one…and hanging it up in

my home was a bloody experience.  It’s impossible to handle a thorny crown without bleeding.

 

John, Chapter 19, Verses 17 and 18…

 

JOHN 19:17

And the soldiers made Jesus carry His own cross, and they took Him to the Place

of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha.

 

 

JOHN 19:18

There they crucified Jesus and two other men…one on either side…with Jesus in between.

 

What prompted Jesus, after being scourged, crowned with thorns, slapped, forced to carry a cross too heavy for one man to carry, and sent for crucifixion, which is the worst death in human history, to say in Luke, Chapter 23, Verse 34 as He hung from the Cross…

 

LUKE 23:34

“Father, forgive them…for they do not know what they are doing.”

 

It’s not what we would say.  We would want revenge.  So what prompts a person to react this way in the face of traumatic circumstances?

 

It’s LOVE.  Unconditional love.  The Lord’s treatment of His enemies is heavenly, and we’re going to learn what the Lord has to say about praying for our enemies so we can do the same.

 

Last week’s lesson was on the basics of prayer.  Now let’s learn how to pray for our enemies.  What is prayer?  Prayer is…

 

PRAYER

An intentional and intimate conversation with God…whether formal or informal… whether audible or silent…whether public or private…where we talk to God and where we listen to the messages God has for us, which He communicates either through the Word of God or through people.

 

PRAYER

A supernatural weapon by which the Lord allows us to bring divine power to human circumstances.

 

PRAYER

In prayer, we are vulnerable with God, knowing that He knows us better than we

know ourselves.  He knows what we want and He knows what we need even

before we ask.  We can’t fool Him.  He knows everything about us.

 

Let’s look deeply into the elements of prayer.

 

PRAYER

In prayer, we bring our GRATITUDE for God’s blessings, our PETITIONS for self, our INTERCESSION for others, and our concerns about the influence of our ENEMIES before Almighty God’s throne.  We use His supernatural, divine power to deliver us to the desires of our hearts.

We direct our prayers to God the Father.

In prayer, we express our GRATITUDE.  Prayer time is a good time to

thank God for all He does for us, whether great or small.

 

In THANKSGIVING we ask, “What has God given me that I am grateful for?”  In First Thessalonians, Chapter 5, Verse 18 the Lord encourages us by saying…

 

FIRST THESSALONIANS 5:18

…in everything give thanks…for this is God the Father’s will for those of you in union with Christ Jesus.

 

One of the best things you can do for yourself every day is to write down one thing

you are grateful for that God has done for you.  It will overwhelm you when you realize all He does for you.  He woke you up this morning.  He puts breath into your lungs.  He provides financial blessings.  He allows you to make choices.  He gives you relationships, either to teach you or to nourish you.  These are just a few of the many things He does for you, things you may forget to think about.

We are grateful for His wisdom, for insights, for knowledge, for discernment, and for helping us avoid of making others stumble.

In prayer, we communicate the desires of our heart to God, which is called PETITION for self.

 

In PETITION for self we ask, “What do I want God to change about my life that I can’t change?”  It is not selfish to make requests of God for self, nor is it selfish to put your needs first when you are praying.  What does the Lord want for you?  Psalm 37, Verse 4 tells us.  He wants you to…

 

PSALM 37:4

Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.

We communicate our wishes for others to God through prayer, which is called INTERCESSION.

 

It’s wise to make a list of the people for whom you are praying. In INTERCESSION we ask, “Who on my list needs supernatural, divine help?”  In INTERCESSION, we make a case to God for others…whether we know them or not…even if we don’t know their names…and we ask God to bring His supernatural, divine power to their circumstances.

We pray to God on behalf of our ENEMIES, just as God requests.

 

In Matthew, Chapter 5, Verse 44 the Lord says…

 

MATTHEW 5:44

…love your enemies unconditionally, and pray for those who persecute you…

 

When praying for our ENEMIES, praying for God’s good to be bestowed on those who persecute us, we ask of the Lord, “How does following this command look in practice?”  In practice, we make a list of our enemies, and we are NOT generic (I’d

like to pray for people who are mean to me).  No!  We name names.

 

The hardest part of praying for your enemies is admitting to yourself you have enemies, those who are not on your side who wish you harm.

We pray for assistance though the divine power of God the Holy the Spirit.

Here’s an example of a prayer.

 

THANKSGIVING

 

Almighty God and Father…we thank you for the blessing of the meal that you

have put before us…

 

PETITION

 

…we pray that you never let us forget that You are the source of our blessings… even the food we eat…and when we lack, we pray You remind us to come to You with our concerns…

 

INTERCESSION

 

…we ask You to keep on providing for those who find it hard to get meals every day…blessed them in a way that never allows them to go hungry…

 

ENEMIES

 

…we pray that you bless those who persecute us, satisfying their hunger and all

their other needs…and we pray that You keep on putting our enemies in a position to succeed, but not at our expense…

 

INVOKE GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT’S POWER

 

…we ask this through the power of God the Holy Spirit…

 

INVOKE THE POWER OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

 

…in Christ’s name…AMEN!

 

God wants us to make prayer a habit.  First Thessalonians, Chapter 5, Verse 17…

 

FIRST THESSALONIANS 5:17

Pray without ceasing … (make it a habit to pray) …

 

Giving thanks is easy.  Petitioning for self is easy.  Interceding for others is easy.  Praying for our enemies is NOT easy.  What is an enemy?

 

ENEMY

Someone with harmful intentions toward us…someone actively working against your well-being or success…someone who is not on your side.

 

ENEMY

Someone who persecutes you, or opposes you, or wants to hurt you…someone with severe hostility toward you who repeatedly goes against you and your desires…someone who doesn’t like you or love you.

 

ENEMY

Someone who does things to offend you, or dishonor you, or hurt your feelings, or anger you, or disappoint you…someone who frustrates you, or threatens you, or even kills you…someone who abuses you…who takes advantage of you.

 

Who are your enemies?

 

Make a list.  Pick at least one person right now who fits the description you just heard.  Let’s think about who our enemies are, what loving them unconditionally means, and what it means to pray for them.  How is it possible to wish our enemies well and to pray for them when we might not want to do it?

 

For example, the Jews and Samaritans had nothing to do with each other. There were religious and racial animosities between them.  Yet Jesus, a Jew, was cordial to them.  Today, the Jews and the Iranian extremists are similar.  They do not value each other or trust each other.

 

Praying for your enemies is one of the deepest forms of unconditional love.

 

Jesus genuinely wanted the best for His enemies.  Jesus says, “Love them if they destroy your home, if they wreck your opportunities, and even if they kill you… love them.  Be a person so changed inside because of divine unconditional love that it is reflected in everything you think and in everything you do.”  Jesus is asking us to do what He did at the Cross.

 

It’s what Stephen, the first Christian martyr did as he was being stoned to death.  Acts, Chapter 7, Verses 51 to 60…

 

ACTS 7:51

“You men (Pharisees) who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart, always resisting God the Holy Spirit…you are doing just as your fathers did.”

 

ACTS 7:52

“Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of Jesus…the Righteous One…and they were betrayers and murderers just as you have now become…”

 

ACTS 7:53

“…you who received the law as ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it.”

 

ACTS 7:54

Now when the Pharisees heard this, they were cut to the quick, and they began gnashing their teeth at him.

 

ACTS 7:55

But being filled with God the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God the Father…

 

ACTS 7:56

…and Stephen said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God the Father.”

 

ACTS 7:57

But they cried out with a loud voice and covered their ears and rushed at Stephen with one impulse.

 

ACTS 7:58

When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him…and the witnesses laid aside their robes at the feet of a young man named Saul (of Tarsus…the apostle Paul).

 

ACTS 7:59

As they went on stoning him to death, Stephen called on the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”

 

ACTS 7:60

Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, Stephen fell asleep (he died).

 

When you pray for enemies, you genuinely want good things for them.

 

 

The majority of Iranians are not radical extremists.  We do not need to fear most Muslims.  We don’t avoid unbelievers.  We can love them, befriend them, and seek to share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ with them.

The one who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord…and the Lord will repay him for his good deed.

LESSON PART TWO

 

What are the Lord’s specific instructions about how to pray for our enemies?

 

Let’s look at biblical passages that instruct us concerning how to handle our enemies.  Matthew, Chapter 5, Verses 43 to 48…

 

MATTHEW 5:43

“You have heard it said, ‘You shall love your neighbor unconditionally and hate your enemy.’”

 

MATTHEW 5:44

“But I (the Lord Jesus Christ) say to you, love your enemies unconditionally and pray for those who persecute you…”

 

MATTHEW 5:45

“…so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven…for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous (believers in Christ) and the unrighteous (unbelievers).”

 

We are to be a reflection of the Lord’s unconditional love for His enemies.

 

MATTHEW 5:46

For if you choose to love unconditionally only those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

 

MATTHEW 5:47

If you choose to greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles (who are unbelievers) do the same?

 

MATTHEW 5:48

Therefore, you are to be perfect (spiritually mature)…for your heavenly Father is perfect.

 

In other words, “If you love your enemies the way God loves His enemies, then you show that you are a child of God.”

Luke, Chapter 6, Verses 27 to 36…

 

LUKE 6:27

“But I (the Lord Jesus Christ) say to all of you who hear, love all of your enemies unconditionally, and do good to those who hate all of you…”

LUKE 6:28

“…bless those who curse all of you, pray for those who mistreat all of you.”

 

LUKE 6:29

“Whosoever hits you on the cheek…offer him the other cheek also…and whosoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him.”

 

LUKE 6:30

“Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.”

 

LUKE 6:31

“Treat others the same way all of you want them to treat all of you.”

 

LUKE 6:32

“If you love unconditionally only those who love you unconditionally, and you do, what credit is that to you? For even sinners (unbelievers) love unconditionally those who love them unconditionally.”

 

LUKE 6:33

“If all of you choose to do good to those who do good to all of you, what credit is that to all of you? For even sinners (unbelievers) do the same.”

 

LUKE 6:34

“If you choose to lend to those from whom all of you expect to receive, what credit is that to all of you? Even sinners (unbelievers) lend to sinners (unbelievers) in order to receive back the same amount.”

 

LUKE 6:35

“But love your enemies unconditionally…and do good…and lend expecting nothing in return…and your reward will be great and all of you will be sons of the Most High…for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.”

 

LUKE 6:36

“Therefore, be merciful, just as your heavenly Father is merciful.”

 

What do we learn from the Lord’s instruction about praying for our enemies?

We learn the Lord thinks differently than we do about EVERYTHING, including how to treat enemies…Isaiah, Chapter 55, Verse 9 says…

 

ISAIAH 55:9

“Just as the heavens are higher than the earth…so are My ways higher than your ways…and My thoughts higher than your thoughts…says the Lord.”

We learn that prayer doesn’t require us to be articulate.  “I don’t know what to say” is never an excuse when praying for your enemies.  The Lord knows what you want before you ask.  Sometimes the best prayers are silent thoughts.

We learn the power to love our enemies comes from God, not us.  The fruit of God the Holy Spirit toward others is patience, and kindness, and goodness, and He produces this fruit in believers in Christ…we don’t have the power to do it ourselves.

We learn it’s an option to hold grudges against our enemies.  Just know our souls will suffer if we refuse to forgive.  A bitter and unforgiving soul is self-destructive.

In Hebrews, Chapter 12, Verse 15 the Lord says…

 

HEBREWS 12:15

See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God…and see to it that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled…

We learn our prayer will bless our enemies.  We pray from the heart. We pray that God gets our enemies the gospel of Jesus Christ, delivered by someone they trust.  We pray for their salvation.  We pray for their deliverance from evil.

We learn to pray for high impact lessons for our enemies so they learn how to treat people.

We learn to pray for our enemy’s repentance…that they have a change of mind

about having a relationship with Christ.

We learn to pray for our enemy’s well-being.  We pray for their needs.  We pray for good things to happen to them.

We learn to pray for the ability to direct unconditional love toward them through the power of God the Holy Spirit, even when we don’t want to do so.

We learn to ask in prayer to be shielded from their intended harm.

 

Loving our enemies unconditionally and praying for them is what God wants for us.  He wants us to imitate Him.

 

Praying for our enemies is proof that the power of the kingdom of God is a real and functional part our lives.  Always include your enemies in your prayers.

On the day of your physical birth the Lord…God the Son…the Creator…gifted

you with life…the same life He gifted to Adam, the federal head of the human race.  Genesis, Chapter 2, Verse 7…

 

GENESIS 2:7

Then the Lord (God the Son) formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of lives…and the man became a living being.

 

Our parents do not give us life.  They each participate in giving us birth.  God the

Son gives us the gift of life by breathing His breath into us.

 

What will you do with the gift?

 

So many squander the gift of life.  This gospel of Jesus Christ is an invitation for you to stop, RIGHT NOW…RIGHT THIS MINUTE…RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE…to make the most important decision of your life.

 

Perhaps you don’t know you were born with a problem.  You were born in a state of sin.  Romans, Chapter 5, Verse 12 says…

 

ROMANS 5:12

…through one man…Adam…sin entered into the world…and spiritual death entered the world through his sin…so spiritual death spread to all men…because all men were considered by God to have sinned when Adam sinned.

 

It’s not your fault you were born in a state of sin, but IT IS YOUR CIRCUMSTANCE.

Who says so?  The Lord says so in His Word…the Bible…the inerrant Canon of Scripture.  First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22 says…

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22a

…all in union with Adam at physical birth (and that is every human being who comes to earth) are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…

 

Luckily a “state” is a temporary condition.  The Lord…Jesus…the Christ (the Messiah) … knew He would do something for us that we could not do for ourselves.  He fulfilled God the Father’s plan by taking our sin problem upon Himself.

 

The gospel of Jesus Christ you are hearing is the Lord informing you how He took care of your sin problem.  What He wants you to do is to accept His plan for your salvation.

 

There is nothing for you to DO to take advantage of God’s plan for your salvation.  You cannot save yourself.  In fact, anything you do to save yourself interferes with God’s plan for you.

 

Romans, Chapter 4, Verse 4 says you CAN'T work for salvation…

 

ROMANS 4:4

Now to the one who works for salvation, his wage for his work is not credited to

his account as a favor from the grace of God, but his wage is credited as what is

due for the work.

 

Yet your hardest work is not perfect enough save you.  It’s best to take the Lord’s advice on how to be saved.

 

RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT, RIGHT NOW, RIGHT THIS MOMENT you can

make a one-time decision and be saved for all time.  John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…

 

JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the doubting apostle Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation) … and I am the truth (the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Word of God) … and I am the resurrection life (eternal life) … and no one comes to God the Father in heaven but through believing in Me.”

 

Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31 exhorts…

 

ACTS 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God…you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

 

First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4 tell you about the One who saves

you…

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3

For I (the apostle Paul) delivered to all of you as of primary importance the gospel message I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for your sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

 

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4

…and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

 

The only perfectly satisfactory payment for your sin in the eyes of God the Father is what the Lord Jesus Christ did to pay for your sins with His blood at the Cross.

 

In John, Chapter 3, Verse 36, the Lord provides an invitation and a warning…

 

JOHN 3:36

“He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”

 

Your soul, once born, never dies.  It is everlasting, with a beginning an no ending.  You choose where your soul spends eternity.  You can believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and spend eternity in heaven with Him when you close your eyes in this life…OR…you can spend eternity in the Lake of Fire, commonly known as hell, a very real place with very real, eternal consequences.  Matthew, Chapter 13, Verses 40 to 42 say…

 

MATTHEW 13:40

…just as tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age.

 

MATTHEW 13:41

The Son of Man (the Lord Jesus Christ) will send forth His elect angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks (unbelievers)…and those who practice lawlessness (unbelievers)…

 

MATTHEW 13:42

…and the elect angels will throw unbelievers into the Lake of Fire…and in that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (for all eternity).

 

What’s your choice?  Do you choose an eternal relationship with the eternal God or would you prefer to work at saving yourself?

 

Put your pride aside…put your religion aside…and take the free gift of salvation.  In John, Chapter 6, Verse 37, the Lord says…

 

JOHN 6:37b

…the ones who come to Me…to believe in Me…I will certainly not cast out into the outer darkness…the Lake of Fire.

 

There aren’t many sure things in life.  This is one of them.  BELIEVE in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.
