Teaching the Word of God

Verse-by-Verse

RORY CLARK

Pastor-Teacher

Good Morning!

I’m Pastor Rory Clark welcoming you to a Bible lesson with Barah Ministries.

This online ministry is a great place to learn about the Lord Jesus Christ and to be introduced to the sacrifice He made for all human beings, including you, so all of His creatures could have a relationship with Him.

As a Christian, when you study the Word of God, you can develop a deep, intimate and personal relationship with the Savior of the world and the Sovereign God of the Universe.   You can get to know Him as a person and not look at Him as a concept.

Studying the Bible is one of the best gifts you give yourself every day.  Here at Barah Ministries, we’re more than glad to provide a place for you to get accurate teaching that paints a vivid picture of the significance of the Person and the work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and how He matters in your life.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

Christians…How is the Lord Using You?

LESSON INTRODUCTION

It’s a significant question!

The most important decision we make as human beings is the decision to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, placing our trust in His Person, and His Word, and His work on the Cross…both to deliver us to salvation and to free us from being a target of the wrath of God the Father…the situation into which we were born.

We count on learned men to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with us in an understandable and accurate way so we can make our decision for or against a relationship with Christ.  One such learned man was John the Baptist who had a clear idea of God’s plan for his life…John, Chapter 1, Verses 6 to 8…

JOHN 1:6

There came a man who was sent from God the Father, whose name was John the

Baptist.

JOHN 1:7

John the Baptist came as a witness…to testify about the Light (the Lord Jesus Christ) … so that all might believe in the Light (the Lord Jesus Christ) through him.

JOHN 1:8

John the Baptist himself was not the Light…he came only to testify about the Light.

God had a plan for the life of John the Baptist from the moment God placed John the Baptist into his mother’s womb.  God’s plan was to use John the Baptist for a purpose.  John the Baptist agreed to execute God’s purpose for his life.

God has a plan for your life as well. So if you’re a Christian, how is the Lord using you?  Keep that question in the forefront of your mind during today’s lesson, as we hear the last thoughts of an amazing and humble Christian…John the Baptist…and as we hear the apostle John’s last thoughts to close out John, Chapter 3.

OPENING SONG INTRODUCTION

Let’s hear some music!    The Lord longs to bless us.  Ephesians, Chapter 1, Verse 3 says…

EPHESIANS 1:3

Worthy of praise is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ…who has blessed us believers in Christ in eternity past with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms (a place of permanence) … through our union with Christ Jesus…

Psalm 37, Verse 4 says…

PSALM 37:4

Delight yourself in the Lord…and He will bless you with the desires of your heart.

Laura Story is a Christian songwriter and performer whose husband Martin was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly after they were married.  Laura wanted God to “fix it!”  He did.  Laura’s husband is alive today.  This year they will celebrate their twenty-first wedding anniversary.

Their marriage has not been without its challenges.  Her husband Martin has struggled with health issues for the duration of their marriage.  Yet they have four children together including a set of twins.

What Laura learned is that adversity is one of the ways God reveals Himself to us.  Laura learned to consider her challenges as a blessing from God.  God used her experience and turned it into a Grammy Award winning song about her learning from this incident.  The song is BLESSINGS.  Let’s listen.

OPENING PRAYER

Let us pray...

We’re grateful to You Heavenly Father for providing us with the absolute truth of the Word of God…

Father, thank you for Your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who left heaven to die for us…Your Son…who paid for our sins at the Cross…Your Son…who offers all mankind a spiritual life we cannot get on our own with the bonus of ETERNAL LIFE…thank you for the guidance of God the Holy Spirit who leads us believers in Christ into all the truth by amplifying the meaning of the Word of God as we study it…and thank you for Your plan for all mankind…we know You have an overall plan for all of us AND a specific plan for each of us…

…as we study the lesson today, help us reflect on what You are teaching us

through the Word of God…and help us to see how you want to use us if we are willing…

…we ask these things through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

Christians…How is the Lord Using You?

LESSON PART ONE

We continue our study of the Gospel of John, written by a man who described himself in John, Chapter 13, Verse 23 and other places in this gospel as…

JOHN 13:23b

…the disciple whom Jesus loved.

In John, Chapter 3 the apostle had at least three significant messages for the human race.  First, Jesus Christ is God.  John, Chapter 1, Verse 14…

JOHN 1:14

And the Word (the Lord…God the Son) became flesh (as Jesus…the Christ…the Messiah) … and He lived among us…and we apostles saw His glory with our own eyes…glory as of the only begotten One from the source…God the Father…full of grace and full of truth.

Second, the entire Godhead loves us.  John, Chapter 3, Verse 16…

JOHN 3:16

“For God the Father loved the world unconditionally and so much…that He gave His only begotten Son (the completely unique One…100% God and 100% Man in One Person…the Lord Jesus Christ) … that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but has eternal life.”

Third, John highlights the salvation offer from the Lord by revealing a conversation between the Lord and a Pharisee…Nicodemus.  The message to Nicodemus can be summed up by John, Chapter 20, Verse 31…

JOHN 20:31

…these things in the Bible are written so all of you may BELIEVE that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah) … God the Son in human form…and that by believing in Him you may have the resurrection life (eternal life) in His name.

Those three messages…Jesus Christ is God…Jesus Christ loves each of you PERSONALLY… so BELIEVE in Him and be saved…are worthy of consideration by every member of the human race.

In the first part of John, Chapter 3, the Lord Jesus Christ personally evangelized to a prominent and well respected Pharisee…Nicodemus.  The Lord’s evangelism was an education for all believers in Christ concerning how to tell others about the salvation offer of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Nicodemus was stunned.  Yet if we can make any conclusions from the future actions of Nicodemus, we’ll get to meet him in heaven.  John, Chapter 19, Verses 38 to 42…

JOHN 19:38

After these things (the crucifixion of Jesus Christ)…Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus (but a secret one for fear of the Jews) asked Pilate if he might take away the body of Jesus…and Pilate granted permission. So Joseph came and took away His body.

JOHN 19:39

Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.

JOHN 19:40

The two men took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

JOHN 19:41

Now in the place where Jesus was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid (a tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea).

JOHN 19:42

Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby,

they laid Jesus there.

Now let’s listen to John’s summary of the third chapter of his gospel…John, Chapter 3, Verses 22 to 36…

JOHN 3:22

After these things, Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and baptizing.

JOHN 3:23

John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there…and people were coming and were being baptized—

JOHN 3:24

…for John had not yet been thrown into prison.

JOHN 3:25

Therefore, there arose a discussion on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about purification.

JOHN 3:26

And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him.”

JOHN 3:27

John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven.”

JOHN 3:28

“You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’”

JOHN 3:29

“He who has the bride is the bridegroom…but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made full.”

JOHN 3:30

“He must increase, but I must decrease.”

JOHN 3:31

“He who comes from above is above all…he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.”

JOHN 3:32

“What He has seen and heard, of that He testifies…and no one receives His testimony.”

JOHN 3:33

“He who has received His testimony has set his seal to this, that God is true.”

JOHN 3:34

“For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God…for He gives the Spirit without measure.”

JOHN 3:35

“The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.”

JOHN 3:36

“He who believes in the Son has eternal life…but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

Noe let’s study the passage verse-by-verse beginning with John, Chapter 3, Verse 22…

JOHN 3:22

After these things (a reference to the conversation with Nicodemus) … Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there Jesus was spending time with His disciples and baptizing.

If we look at a map of Israel in Jesus’ day, there were three regions…Judea, Samaria, and Galilee.  Jerusalem is in Judea, and if you assess where Jesus had all His troubles, they happened in Jerusalem.  Yet Jesus certainly was not afraid to go there.  And the happenings of John, Chapter 3 take place in Jerusalem.

John, Chapter 3, Verse 23…

JOHN 3:23

John the Baptist also was baptizing in Aenon (E-NON) near Salim (SAH-LEEM), because there was much water there and people were coming and were being baptized—

Aenon is a word that means “springs,” and it was customary for people to come there for the medicinal benefits of what were probably hot springs.  It was a time before Jacuzzi convinced us that sitting in a hot tub with jets was better than sitting in a hot spring of mud.  John, Chapter 3, Verse 24…

JOHN 3:24

…for John the Baptist had not yet been thrown into prison.

The apostle John gives us this reference to allow us to compare time frames with the other three gospels.  As we learn in Mark, Chapter 6, Verse 20…

MARK 6:20

…Herod was afraid of John the Baptist, knowing that John was a righteous and holy man (a believer in Christ) … and Herod kept John safe. And when Herod heard John, he was very perplexed, but Herod used to enjoy listening to John the Baptist.

The natural man, Herod, did not understand the things of God the Holy Spirit.

Herod had taken his brother Philip’s wife Herodias and was living with her.  John the Baptist spoke out about it, which angered Herodias.  She later orchestrated his imprisonment and his murder.  John, Chapter 3, Verses 25 and 26…

JOHN 3:25

Now there arose a discussion on the part of John the Baptist’s disciples with a Jew about purification.

JOHN 3:26

And John the Baptist’s disciples came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan…the One of whom you have testified…behold He is baptizing and all are coming to Him.”

Jesus wasn’t baptizing.  His disciples were.  But John the Baptist’s disciples wanted him to feel bad because Jesus was eclipsing Him in popularity.  They saw evangelism as a competition and they were letting John the Baptist know he was losing.  What was John the Baptist’s response?

When we return from the break, we’ll request an offering and then we’ll find out what John the Baptist had to say about the “competition.”

OFFERING INTRODUCTION

In Philippians, Chapter 4, Verses 15 to 17, here’s what the apostle Paul has to say about giving…

PHILIPPIANS 4:15

As you know…Philippian believers…at the first preaching of the gospel (in my first missionary journey) … after I (Paul) left Macedonia…no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you alone…

PHILIPPIANS 4:16

…for even in Thessalonica (in my second missionary journey) … you sent a financial gift more than once for my needs.

PHILIPPIANS 4:17

Not that I seek the gift (for myself…even though I appreciate it) … but I seek the profit which increases to your account from God when you give.

One of the great pleasures of life is GIVING…especially to this ministry…so that anyone who wants to learn about the Lord Jesus Christ can do so free of charge.  In addition, it’s a privilege to see how God blesses you for your giving.

Let’s listen to Deacon Denny Goodall present one of his always thoughtful and always inspiring offering messages.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON

Christians…How is the Lord Using You?

LESSON PART TWO

Welcome back!

John the Baptist didn’t see the baptism being conducted by Jesus and His disciples as a competition.  John the Baptist couldn’t have been happier for Jesus.  There is no competition among Christians.  Both John the Baptist and Jesus had the same objective…the saving of souls.  Here’s what John the Baptist had to say to his followers in John, Chapter 3, Verse 27…

JOHN 3:27

John the Baptist said to his disciples, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.”

John the Baptist knew that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Sovereign God of the Universe and the promised Jewish Messiah.  John the Baptist knew from the womb how the Lord was going to use his life.  He is the messenger who introduced the world to the public ministry of Jesus.  John, Chapter 1, Verse 23…

JOHN 1:23

John the Baptist said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight

the way of the Lord,’ just as Isaiah the prophet said.”

Or as the musical Godspell would say it, “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord!”  John the Baptist continues in John, Chapter 3, Verses 28 and 29…

JOHN 3:28

“You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Christ (the Messiah),’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Jesus Christ.’”

John the Baptist offers an analogy.

JOHN 3:29

“He who has the bride is the bridegroom…but the friend of the bridegroom who stands and hears him rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made full.”

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Bridegroom.  His wife is the remnant of Jewish believers in Christ in Israel.  John the Baptist is the equivalent of a Best Man at a wedding.  He is there for the groom.  He is the messenger…an evangelist…who announces the presence and the significance of the groom…the Lord Jesus Christ.  In John, Chapter 1, Verse 27 John the Baptist says…

JOHN 1:27

“…He who comes after me (the Lord Jesus Christ) is One the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

Next, John the Baptist gives us a significant lesson in John, Chapter 3, Verse 30…

JOHN 3:30

“Jesus must increase…and I must decrease.”

So it is with all Christians.  When we become believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, we have a role to play in His plan for all mankind.  We play up the Lord’s significance and we play down our own significance.  We do not let our egos get the best of us.  John the Baptist was masterful in his display of humility.  He was a man who knew how the Lord was using him and he willingly obeyed the Lord’s instructions on how to carry out his mission.

Next, the apostle John closes out Chapter 3 of his gospel with a summary of the

learning, beginning at John, Chapter 3, Verse 31…

JOHN 3:31

“He who comes from above (the Lord Jesus Christ) is above all…he who is of the earth (John the Baptist) is from the earth and speaks of the earth. Again, He who comes from heaven (the Lord Jesus Christ) is above all.”

The Lord Jesus Christ is the One who has come into the world.  He has come from heaven.  He was sent by God the Father.  The Lord Jesus Christ has firsthand knowledge of God the Father just as a great witness would...John, Chapter 16, Verse 28…

JOHN 16:28a

I (the Lord Jesus Christ) came forth from God the Father and have come into the world…

As a human teacher, John the Baptist did not have the same knowledge as Jesus because he had not met God the Father and he had never been to heaven.  Human teachers can teach the truth.  Jesus IS truth.  We know this from John, Chapter 14, Verse 6 where…

JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the doubting apostle Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation) … and I am the truth (of the gospel message in the Word of God) … and I am the resurrection life (eternal life) … and no one comes to God the Father in heaven but through believing in Me.”

Jesus is the ultimate teacher.  Jesus knows God the Father personally.  He has come from heaven.  He knows all the things of heaven.  He willingly reveals all of these things to us in His Word.

John the Baptist is a messenger from God.  Jesus is NOT a messenger.  He is THE messenger and He is THE message.  John the Baptist continues informing his disciples in John, Chapter 3, Verse 32…

JOHN 3:32

“What the Lord Jesus Christ has seen and heard, of that He testifies…and no one

receives His testimony.”

Jesus revealed His knowledge of God the Father and of heaven to the world of unbelievers, especially to the Jewish unbelievers (the scribes and Pharisees), and they didn’t want to hear what He had to say.  John, Chapter 3, Verses 33 and 34…

JOHN 3:33

“He who has received Jesus’ testimony has set his seal to this, that God the Father is truthful.”

JOHN 3:34

“For Jesus…whom God the Father has sent (to save us) … speaks the words of God the Father…for God the Father gives God the Holy Spirit (to lead us into all the truth) without measure.”

The Lord Jesus Christ is reliable and He provides God the Holy Spirit as a gift from the other members of the Godhead to help us understand the truth.

The apostle John summarizes the message of John, Chapter 3 in Verses 35 and 36…

JOHN 3:35

“God the Father loves the Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) and has given all things into His hand.”

That’s trust.  To conclude Chapter 3, an invitation and a warning…

JOHN 3:36

“He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”

What great thoughts and what great lessons we have the privilege of learning by studying the gospel of John, Chapter 3.  Thanks be to our God for the wisdom of His Word.

We got to see the Lord Jesus Christ evangelize.  We got to see the Lord use John the Baptist’s life for a purpose.  As you reflect on the lessons of Chapter 3, it’s a good idea to reflect on how the Lord is using your life as a believer in Christ.  He is using your life for His purpose and it’s a pretty good idea to know your purpose in life…the way you make a difference.

THE GOSPEL MESSAGE

The Good News of Jesus Christ’s Salvation Offer to the Human Race

The next ten minutes could be the ten most important minutes of your life.  You’ll be introduced to the good news concerning how you can spend all eternity in heaven when you close your eyes in this life.  We want you to know that…

GOD WANTS YOU!

He Wants You Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life

…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.

The Lord Jesus Christ created you!  He loves you unconditionally.  He forgives you for every sin you’ll ever commit.  He offers you His grace when you make mistakes.  He has always had you in His mind for all eternity.  He knows your name.  The Lord wants the best for you.  Have you ever had a human being love you this way?

Well, if you don't yet have a relationship with the Lord and Jesus Christ, He

considers you to be a SPIRITUALLY DEAD sinner who needs a Savior.  Romans, Chapter 3, Verse 23 says…

ROMANS 3:23

…all creatures have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…

Romans, Chapter 3, Verse 10 says…

ROMANS 3:10

…it is written, “There is no creature who is righteous…not even one…”

Your condition at physical birth IS NOT YOUR FAULT, but it is your circumstance.

Spiritual death, caused by sin, is a barrier between us and God.  Spiritual death is the first death.  Eternity in the Lake of Fire is the second death, and it’s your eternal fate if you close your eyes in this life as an unbeliever.  You do not want the second death!  Revelation, Chapter 20, Verse 14…

REVELATION 20:14

Then death and Hades were thrown into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death, the Lake of Fire.

First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22 says…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22

…all in union with Adam at physical birth (and that is every human being) are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…but all who are in union with Christ will be made spiritually alive by God.

God wants you to have a spiritual life.  The Lord provides you with the Bible to illuminate the SPIRITUAL LIFE, which is your path to heaven.  John, Chapter 20, Verse 31 says…

JOHN 20:31

…these things written in the Bible have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ…(He is the Messiah…the Son of God…the Lord…who took on human form) … and that by believing in Him you may have the resurrection life (eternal life) in His name.

The Bible contains the Lord’s exact thinking.  It is your “owner’s manual”

for life.  The good news is the Lord Jesus Christ did something about your sin

problem.  He has a plan for your salvation because He doesn’t want anyone to go to the Lake of Fire…Second Peter, Chapter 3, Verse 9 says…

SECOND PETER 3:9

The Lord is not slow about His promise of salvation, as some accuse Him of... instead, He is patient toward unbelievers…not wishing for any to perish (in the Lake of Fire) but for all to come to repentance (a voluntary change of mind about having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ).

By your own choice, you can be SPIRITUALLY ALIVE, making you special in God’s sight…Psalm 116, Verse 15 says…

PSALM 116:15

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones (His saints… His spiritually alive believers in Christ).

The fact that GOD WANTS YOU and has made a way for you to be SPIRITUALLY ALIVE is a great thing to know, especially as you get older, because everyone dies.  What’s going to happen to you when you close your eyes in this life?  Will you go to heaven or will you go to hell?

It’s your choice.  How can you get to heaven?  RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT, RIGHT NOW, you can tell God the Father that you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that is the moment of eternal life for you.  Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31…

ACTS 16:31

“Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”

The ONE WAY…the ONLY WAY to get to heaven is through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ…John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…

JOHN 14:6

Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation)… and I am the truth (through the gospel message in the Word of God)…and I am the resurrection life…and no one comes to God the Father (in heaven) but through believing in Me.”

Who is this God who saves you?  The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ

in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3

For I (Paul) delivered to all of you as of primary importance the gospel message I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4

…and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…

Believing in Jesus Christ is acknowledging that you can’t do a thing to get to heaven on your own.  You confirm that being “a good person” does not get you to heaven.  It’s wiser to let God save you because once God does something, He never changes His mind!  In John, Chapter 10, Verses 28 and 29, the Lord says…

JOHN 10:28

“…I (the Lord Jesus Christ) give eternal life to believers in Christ, and they will never perish…and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”

JOHN 10:29

“And My Father, who has given believers in Christ to me, is greater than all…and no one can snatch believers in Christ out of my Father’s hand either.”

You can’t lose your salvation.  If ANYONE says you can lose your salvation, they are lying to you.

God has an enemy, Satan, the ruler of this world.  He creates counterfeit lifestyles to blind your mind.  His strategy against the human race is RELIGION, and the religions of the world mislead you into thinking you're saved when you may not be.  Satan wants you to believe you can work your way to heaven, earning your own salvation.  He wants you to remain spiritually dead.

What happens if you reject a relationship with Christ?  In Matthew, Chapter 25, Verse 30, the Lord shares the consequences…

MATTHEW 25:30

“Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness (the Lake of Fire)…and in

that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

So, heed the warning and accept the Lord’s invitation in John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…

JOHN 3:36

“He who believes in the Son of God has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”

You can join a host of your believer friends in heaven when you close your eyes in this life!  Reject SPIRITUAL DEATH.  Choose SPIRITUAL LIFE right now!  Just tell the Lord you BELIEVE in His ability to save you and SPIRITUAL LIFE is yours for all eternity.
