LESSON INTRODUCTION
Anger is not always a sin. The Bible tells us so in Ephesians, Chapter 4, Verse 26…
EPHESIANS 4:26a Be angry and do not sin…
Anger is a natural, God-given emotion in reaction to being hurt, or mistreated… when experiencing evil…or when witnessing injustice. Anger can lead to sin. Yet Scripture is clear. You can be angry without sinning.
The Lord Jesus Christ experienced anger when He saw evil and injustice. In today’s lesson, as we complete our study of the Gospel of John, Chapter 2, we’ll witness the Lord expressing a righteous anger.

PROVERBS 19:11 A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger…and it is his glory to overlook a transgression.

We’re grateful to You Heavenly Father for providing us with the absolute truth of the Word of God…
Father…thank you for all the good gifts that come from heaven above…they are the gifts You and the other members of the Godhead provide…we’re grateful for Your Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who provides us with the gift of life…we’re grateful for the Word of God which gives all who study it the gift of divine wisdom…we’re grateful for the gift of God the Holy Spirit who orchestrates our lives as our Mentor and Teacher…and we’re grateful for the lessons You provide through the people who help us and through the people who hurt us…
…teach us to be angry as the Lord is…a righteous anger without sinning…and through this lesson teach us not to let anger consume us so we hold grudges against others, allowing roots of bitterness to spring up in our souls… …we ask these things through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.

LESSON PART ONE
Our last two lessons were part of a special study of prayer, with a focus on praying for our enemies. Providing these lessons meant we pushed the pause button on our study of the Gospel of the apostle John.
The prayer lessons were part of our seventeenth annual Coeur d’Alene Conference in Post Falls, Idaho sponsored by our good friends and faithful students of the Word of God, John and Monica Miller.
To John and Monica, thank you for your friendship and for your hospitality…and even more, thanks for providing the Word of God to the hearers God has brought to the Coeur d’Alene Conference lessons for almost two decades. I always look forward to spending time with you two, but especially during the first weekend of August every year. Today we’re studying the second passage of the gospel of John, Chapter 2.
John is wonderfully clear in His gospel. Both at the start of his gospel and at the end of his gospel he is crystal clear in communicating that JESUS CHRIST IS GOD. At the beginning of the gospel of John, in Chapter 1, Verse 1, John says…
JOHN 1:1 In the beginning (not a beginning) was the Word (the Lord…God the Son) … and the Word (the Lord…God the Son) was with God the Father…and THE WORD WAS GOD.
And in John, Chapter 1, Verse 14…
JOHN 1:14 And the Word became flesh (He took on human form as Jesus…the Christ…the Messiah) and He lived among us here on earth and we apostles saw His glory with our own eyes…the glory of the only begotten One from God the Father…full of grace and full of truth.
At the end of the gospel of John, in Chapter 20, Verses 30 and 31, John says…
JOHN 20:30 There were many other signs Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples which are not written in the Bible…
JOHN 20:31 …but these things written in the Bible are written so all of you may BELIEVE that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah)…God the Son in human form…and that by believing in Him you may have the resurrection life (eternal life) in His name.
In the first passage of Chapter 2 we studied the significance of the Lord’s first SIGN…His first miracle…which occurred at the wedding feast at Cana. All of the SIGNS Jesus performs in the Bible teach us something about Him. So SIGNS have a purpose. Miracles get people’s attention, attracting them to a message. A SIGN is a miracle with meaning.

The meaning of all the SIGNS Jesus performs point to His identity, letting people know JESUS CHRIST IS GOD!
Now let’s study the second passage in John, Chapter 2, Verses 12 to 25…
JOHN 2:12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples and they stayed there a few days.
JOHN 2:13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
JOHN 2:14 And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.
JOHN 2:15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen…and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables…
JOHN 2:16 …and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things away! Stop making My Father’s house a place of business.”
JOHN 2:17 His disciples remembered it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”
JOHN 2:18 The Jews then said to Him, “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?”
JOHN 2:19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
JOHN 2:20 The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
JOHN 2:21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
JOHN 2:22 So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this, and they believed the Scripture and the Word which Jesus had spoken.
JOHN 2:23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing.
JOHN 2:24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men…
JOHN 2:25 …and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.
You’ll notice three parts of this passage.

Let’s tackle the first part of the second passage of John, Chapter 2 verse-by-verse. John, Chapter 2, Verses 12 and 13…
JOHN 2:12 After this (the miracle of the wedding feast at Cana…turning water into wine) Jesus went down to Capernaum (pronounced K-FAIR-NAHUM…the village of Nahum)…and Jesus and His mother and His brothers and His disciples went with Him. They stayed there for not many days.
Capernaum was a hangout for the Lord. Now it was time to go into the fire.
JOHN 2:13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Jerusalem was the fire.
What is Passover in Jewish history? PASSOVER A major Jewish holiday in the spring of each year to commemorate the Exodus of the Jews from slavery in Egypt. It is celebrated by avoiding leavened foods…by eating unleavened bread, called matzah…and by gathering for a ritual family feast called a Seder.
God asked Pharaoh to release the Jews from their captivity. Pharaoh refused. God sent ten plagues against the Egyptians to convince Pharaoh to release the captive Jews.
God’s final plague against the Egyptians was the death of every firstborn child and firstborn animal in the land of Egypt. The term “Passover” comes from this plague because God “passed over” the Jewish homes marked with a lamb’s blood above the doorpost as He struck dead the Egyptian firstborns.
In Jesus’ day, He was considered an agitator, even though He wasn’t one. In fact, Jesus was an advocate of peace, which we’ll see shortly. That doesn’t mean the Lord was willing to keep silent about the injustices He witnessed. For example, John, Chapter 2, Verses 14 to 17…
JOHN 2:14 In Jerusalem, in the temple courts, Jesus found those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and He found money changers seated at their tables.
JOHN 2:15 And having made a whip out of cords, Jesus drove them all out of the temple area, both the sheep and the oxen…and He poured out the money changers’ coins and overthrew their tables…
JOHN 2:16 …and to those who were selling the doves He said, “Take these things out from here! Stop making My Father’s house a place of business!”
JOHN 2:17 And then Jesus’ disciples remembered that it was written of Him, “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”
Throughout time, human beings have thought of themselves as revolutionaries. Always, there are those who think they have THE idea on how the world is best run.
College students come to mind. Many college students see themselves as the ones who must change the world. (It’s funny what happens to the mind after a few “joints” [marijuana cigarettes] and after a few snorts of cocaine. 😊 What comes flooding into the mind is a picture of the utopia the world could be).
In Jesus, we have the Person who created the heavens, the universe, and the world in which we live. Who better, in collaboration with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit, to decide how the world needs to be run?
Yet the Godhead turned over rulership of this world, for a period of time, to the enemy of God… Satan…who is as deluded about leadership as college students. John, Chapter 12, Verse 31…
JOHN 12:31 Now judgment is upon this world…and the ruler of this world (SATAN) will be cast out (into the outer darkness…the Lake of Fire…a place of separation from God).
The revolutionaries of Jesus’ day were called zealots. In fact, one of His apostles was known as Simon the Zealot until he became a follower of Jesus. Here’s a list of the apostles…Mark, Chapter 3, Verses 13 to 19…
MARK 3:13 And Jesus went up on the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him.
MARK 3:14 And Jesus appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and He could send them out to preach…
MARK 3:15 …and to have the authority to cast out demons.
MARK 3:16 And Jesus appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter)…
MARK 3:17 …and James, the son of Zebedee…and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Bo-a-ner-ges, which means, “Sons of Thunder” or “Heavenly Twins”)…
MARK 3:18 …and Andrew…and Philip…and Bartholomew…and Matthew…and Thomas (the doubting one)… and James, son of Alphaeus…and Thaddaeus…and Simon the Zealot…
MARK 3:19 …and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.
The term “zealots” was a Latin term which described assassins and cut-throats who carried weapons (like swords and daggers) to kill people, especially political killings. They were called Sicarii, which resembles the term Sicario, the paid assassins of the Mexican drug cartel.
Those who resist government seldom succeed. The zealots of Jesus’ day led a revolt against the Romans in 66 AD. I don’t have to tell you how that turned out. It led to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans.
Jesus was not a fan of the establishment. For example, He didn’t care for the unbelieving scribes and Pharisees and was quite vocal about His distaste for them. In Matthew, Chapter 23 there’s an example in Verse 27…
MATTHEW 23:27 Woe to all of you scribes and Pharisees…you hypocrites! For all of you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.
Jesus was not a fan of revolution, either. When Peter engaged in zealot activity in Matthew, Chapter 26, Verses 51 and 52, the Lord was not pleased…
MATTHEW 26:51 One of those who were with Jesus (when He was arrested…Simon Peter) drew his sword and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.
MATTHEW 26:52 Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back in its place…for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.”
Then Jesus reattached the slave’s ear.
The people of His day probably saw the Lord as an agitator because of His protest about making His Father’s house a place of business. Yet Jesus was not an advocate of violence…Matthew, Chapter 5, Verse 39…
MATTHEW 5:39 But I (the Lord Jesus Christ) say to you, do not resist an evil person…but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other cheek to him also (for another slap).
So why did Jesus get upset?
Jesus felt the greedy sellers and money changers were disrespecting God and exploiting people. They turned a sacred place of worship into a noisy, crowded business center.
They perverted this place of worship by occupying the part of the temple called The Court of the Gentiles, the only designated area where non-Jewish unbelievers could pray. The business center took away a place where seekers could learn about the Lord, initiating a relationship with Him. That’s Satan at work.
Jesus was not calling for a utopia because one will exist during the Millennial Reign of Christ at a future time.
Christians are encouraged by God not to resist government, even when it is evil, because the Lord puts governments in place and gives them authority.
Christians are encouraged to speak out against injustice in the power of God, and at the very least to turn over concerns about evil, corruption, and injustice to God in prayer.
In this first section of the passage we are studying, the One with ultimate authority was not pleased with disrespect for His Father’s house. Nor was He pleased with those who were blocking the chance for unbelievers to be saved. So He did something about it. When we return from the break, we’ll request an offering and then we’ll continue our verse-by-verse study of the second passage in John, Chapter 2 to see what else the apostle John wants to teach us.

Welcome back!
No matter what the Lord Jesus Christ did during His time on earth, the scribes and the Pharisees and their unbelieving followers refused to acknowledge Jesus Christ as God. These people allegedly studied Scripture, yet they didn’t understand what they were reading. First Corinthians, Chapter 2, Verse 14 says…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 2:14 But a natural man (the unbeliever) does not accept the things taught by God the Holy Spirit…these things are foolishness to him…and he cannot understand them because they are spiritually appraised.
If they were wise in the matter of Scripture, the scribes and Pharisees would have understood Jesus’ actions in the temple perfectly. They would have recognized the One to whom they were talking. They would have fallen to their knees and worshipped the Messiah for whom they claimed to be waiting.
As my Mom used to say, quoting an English proverb, “None are so blind as those who refuse to see.” You can’t make a person either understand or accept truth if they choose to ignore it.
With everything Jesus did to prove He is God, the scribes and Pharisees demanded more. Show us a sign. Show us a sign. They sounded like parrots. Let’s look at the middle section of the second passage of John, Chapter 2, beginning at Verses 18 and 19…
JOHN 2:18 Then the Jews said to Jesus (after His righteous anger display in the temple), “What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?”
JOHN 2:19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.”
The Lord was predicting their treachery. He knew their answer to His truth was to kill Him…to be rid of Him. Or so they thought. John, Chapter 2, Verses 20 and 21…
JOHN 2:20 The Jews then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
This is a complete misunderstanding of spiritual truth by these “natural men.” The scribes and Pharisees thought Jesus was talking about the temple of Herod. He was not.
JOHN 2:21 Jesus was speaking of the temple of His body.
Jesus was saying to them, “You’ll get a sign when you crucify Me. In three days after my death on the Cross I will be resurrected from the dead by my God and Father.”
John, Chapter 2, Verse 22…
JOHN 2:22 And when Jesus was resurrected from the dead, His disciples remembered He said this to them…and they believed the Scripture and the Word which Jesus had spoken.
The apostles didn’t really understand who Jesus is until after His resurrection from the dead. Those whose minds are not illuminated by Scripture and by God the Holy Spirit cannot understand God or get to know Him.
There are many Christians who do not study the Word of God, yet they pretend to know the Lord. The truth? Without studying the thinking of the Lord, no one can get to know the Lord. First Corinthians, Chapter 2, Verse 16 says…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 2:16 …we believers in Christ have the mind of Christ (the Bible).
The Bible is the exact thinking of the Lord Jesus Christ and it helps all who study it get to know Him.
The scribes and Pharisees didn’t really want a sign from Jesus as to His authority. They were ticked off that Jesus was eating into their “under the table” profits. They pretended to be spiritual but they were corrupt. Their monetary activity was blocking unbelievers from the chance to enter into the kingdom of heaven by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. They shut off the part of the temple set aside for unbelievers to worship. The Lord took exception to this spiritual roadblock… Matthew, Chapter 23, Verse 13…
MATTHEW 23:13 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees…you hypocrites! You shut off the kingdom of heaven from people…and you do not want to enter the kingdom of heaven yourselves…nor do you allow those who want to enter to go into it.”
So it is with Christians today. Many are hypocrites. They’re not interested in the Lord’s thinking communicated in Word of God. They’re not interested in getting to know the Lord. They’re not interested in Christianity. They’re interested in their self-made version of Christianity, manufactured in their heads, guided by intellect or emotion designed to impress people.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the ultimate physician. He does an effective diagnosis by letting all mankind know of its total depravity. Then He suggests a prescription, which is trusting Him, not self, for salvation.
Yet most unbelievers don’t want to hear the Lord and want nothing to do with Him. They are not listening. They want to be told what they WANT to hear instead of what they NEED to hear.
We live in Satan’s kingdom, and it is ANTI-Christ. It’s against Christ. Our heads are filled with His nonsense. The Word of God is the washing machine, cleansing us from lies just as certainly as the Lord cleansed His temple from the corrupt sellers and money changers.
Now the final section of the second passage beginning at John, Chapter 2, Verse 23…
JOHN 2:23 Now when Jesus was in Jerusalem during the Passover feast…many believed in His name and were saved…and they believed in Him because of the signs which Jesus was doing.
It’s just as the apostle John reports in Chapter 20, Verse 30…
JOHN 20:30 There were many other signs Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples which are not written in the Bible…
As a result of these unreported signs that Jesus did, many were saved. John, Chapter 2, Verses 24 and 25…
JOHN 2:24 But Jesus…on His part…was not entrusting Himself to them…for He knew all men…
JOHN 2:25 …and He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.
Our omniscient God who knows all that is knowable knew the treachery in the hearts of men, even those who believe in Him. Therefore, He did not need treacherous men to tell Him about man. In First Samuel, Chapter 16, Verse 7 the Lord says…
FIRST SAMUEL 16:7b “God sees not as man sees…for man looks at the outward appearance…but the Lord looks at the heart.”
For the most part, we are quite hopeless at discerning the motives of others. How often are we shocked when we have attributed to others positive character traits they do not have, and when they reveal themselves as phonies and hypocrites, we stand in disbelief. We don’t want to admit we were wrong about them. The Lord Jesus Christ had no such defect.
What does the Lord see when He looks into the heart of man? Jeremiah, Chapter 17, Verse 9…
JEREMIAH 17:9 “The heart of man is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick…who can even understand the depth of its depravity?”
Yet these are the people the Lord Jesus Christ came to save. All He wants from us is our trust. He’ll do the rest.
As for mankind we are the William Ernest Henley INVICTUS crowd who say, “I am the master of my fate! I am the captain of my soul!” Hardly. Do it yourself spirituality has never and cannot work.
Jesus came to earth to save all mankind even though He knew our hearts. He died for everyone’s benefit, including the scribes and the Pharisees. They refused to see it.
The ultimate example of unconditional love comes from a God who knows us, yet loves us enough to save us anyway. All praise be the Lord Jesus Christ…the real master of our fate and the real captain of our souls.

GOD WANTS YOU! He Wants You Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life
…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.
The Lord Jesus Christ gave you a powerful weapon and a perfect gift from the moment of your physical birth…CHOICE. You get to choose the life you want to live. The life you are living right now is the sum of all the decisions you have made so far.
The Lord Jesus Christ, the Sovereign God of the Universe and the Savior of all mankind, says there are only two choices for your eternal future…either heaven (the small gate and the narrow way) or the Lake of Fire (the wide gate and the broad way) described in Matthew, Chapter 7, Verses 13 and 14…
MATTHEW 7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate…for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction…and there are many who enter through the wide gate (into the Lake of Fire).”
MATTHEW 7:14 “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to the resurrection life (eternal life in heaven) … and there are FEW who find the small gate.”
MOST PEOPLE CHOOSE THE BROAD WAY according to the Lord. Which road will you choose for your eternal life? You have the chance to be the eternal hero of your own life by making the right choice.
Those who are on the broad way that leads to destruction believe there is safety in numbers. It is not true. Believing what everyone else believes does not save you. Learning the truth saves you. Placing your confidence in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation will save you.
The Lord Jesus Christ is 100% God…that’s why we call Him Lord…and He is 100% Man…true humanity like you and me…that’s why we call Him Jesus…and He is the promised Messiah …that’s why we call Him “Christ.” In John, Chapter 14, Verse 6 Jesus says HE is the small gate, which makes Him your guide to heaven… JOHN 14:6 Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation) … and I am the truth (through the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Word of God) … and I am the resurrection life (eternal life) … and no one comes to God the Father in heaven but through believing in Me.”
God the Father’s plan for your life is simple. When you BELIEVE in His Son it’s your ticket to eternal life. Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31 says…
ACTS 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”
Those on the broad way that leads to destruction place their confidence in liars. The Lord Jesus Christ warns about them in Matthew, Chapter 7, Verse 15…
MATTHEW 7:15 “Beware of the false prophets (false teachers) … who come to you in sheep’s clothing (appearing harmless) … who inwardly are ravenous wolves (out to destroy your eternal future).”
As ravenous wolves, false teachers want you to respond to a false gospel message. Proverbs, Chapter 14, Verse 12 illuminates the issue…
PROVERBS 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man (saving yourself by thinking good deeds will earn your salvation) … but its end is the way of death (the second death in the Lake of Fire).
The Lord Jesus Christ offers the true gospel of Jesus Christ as an invitation to be saved in John, Chapter 3, Verse 36…
JOHN 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life (eternal life) right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”
RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT…RIGHT NOW…RIGHT THIS MOMENT you can tell God the Father that you are believing in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation, and that is the moment of eternal life for you.
Who is this God who saves you? The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3 For I (Paul) delivered to all of you as of primary importance the gospel message I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4 …and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
God’s enemy…Satan…is the sponsor of false teachers, false teaching, and a false gospel message. You have to be able to discern the difference between God’s truth and Satan’s lies…John, Chapter 8, Verses 31 and 32…
JOHN 8:31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word (the Word of God from a true teacher), then you are truly disciples of Mine…”
JOHN 8:32 “…and you will know the truth (the true gospel of Jesus Christ) … and the truth will make you free.”
Another warning for those who choose the broad way is Matthew, Chapter 7, Verses 21 to 23…
MATTHEW 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven… but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven (by obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ) will enter heaven.”
MATTHEW 7:22 “Many will say to Me on the day of judgment, ‘Lord…Lord…did we not prophesy in Your name…and in Your name did we not cast out demons…and in Your name did we not perform many miracles?’”
MATTHEW 7:23 “And then I (the Lord Jesus Christ) will declare to them, ‘I never knew you… depart from Me (into the Lake of Fire) … you who kept on practicing a lifestyle of lawlessness.’”
Don’t wait until it’s too late to consider what road you are on! Mark, Chapter 1, Verse 15 says…
MARK 1:15 “The time is fulfilled…and the kingdom of God is at hand…so repent (change your mind about having a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ) … and believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
The will of God the Father is that you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ so you can have a personal relationship with His Son. Those who choose the narrow way have decided that faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone is the ONLY ticket to heaven.
Get off of the broad way that leads to destruction! Get yourself on the narrow way that leads to eternal life in heaven! You can do it RIGHT THIS MINUTE. Jesus Christ is God and He is ready to save you. All you have to do is ask.
