Welcome To BARAH MINISTRIES An Online Christian Church Teaching the Word of God Verse-by-Verse
RORY CLARK Pastor-Teacher
Good Morning!
I’m Pastor Rory Clark welcoming you to a Bible lesson with Barah Ministries.
This online ministry is a great place to learn about the Lord Jesus Christ and to be introduced to the sacrifice He made for all human beings, including you, so all of His creatures could have a relationship with Him.
As a Christian, when you study the Word of God, you can develop a deep, intimate and personal relationship with the Savior of the world and the Sovereign God of the Universe…our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. You can get to know Him as a Person and not think of Him as a concept.
Studying the Bible is one of the best gifts you give yourself every day.
Here at Barah Ministries, we’re glad to provide a place for you to get accurate teaching that paints a vivid picture of the significance of the Person and the Work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and how He matters in your life.
TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON In the Matter of Your Salvation, God is Fair
LESSON INTRODUCTION
Actually, God is fair in EVERY WAY! Peter makes it clear in Acts, Chapter 10, Verse 34…
ACTS 10:34 Opening his mouth, Peter said, “I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality…”
God does not show favoritism or bias based on human status, race, wealth, or background. Galatians, Chapter 3, Verse 28 echoes this sentiment…
GALATIANS 3:28 (In God’s plan for mankind) … There is neither Jew nor Greek (no racial distinction) … there is neither slave nor free man (no social distinction) … there is neither male nor female (no gender distinction) … for you believers in Christ are all one in union with Christ Jesus.
As we transition to the study of John, Chapter 4 we will see the Lord evangelizing again. In John, Chapter 3 the Lord evangelized to a prominent citizen, the Pharisee Nicodemus. In the upcoming chapter the Lord evangelizes to a “nobody” like you and me! The Lord’s evangelism in John Chapters 3 and 4 is proof positive that the Lord does not play favorites.
In this lesson we’ll eavesdrop on the Lord’s longest conversation in the Bible.
OPENING SONG INTRODUCTION
Let’s hear some music! Some of the greatest words ever articulated in lyric are in today’s opening song. “His name is Jesus!” The Almighty God…the Savior of the whole world…the Lord. “His name is Jesus!” Let’s listen to June Murphy sing one of her best songs…COME SEE A MAN.

OPENING PRAYER
Let us pray...
We’re grateful to You Heavenly Father for providing us with the absolute truth of the Word of God…
Father, thank you for treating every one of us as equals in Your eyes…thank you for providing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to every person who comes to earth, in their language, in their location, and even in a way that takes into account their education level so they can fully understand the salvation offer. Not only does this require fairness, but also it requires unconditional love. Thank you for caring for all of us in this way. Thank you for having total regard for the WHOSOEVER among us…
…as we study John, Chapter 4 give us insights into how You think of the “little people” who are often ignored and mistreated here in Satan’s kingdom…
…we ask these things through the power of God the Holy Spirit…in Christ’s name...Amen.
TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON In the Matter of Your Salvation, God is Fair
LESSON PART ONE
We continue our study of the Gospel of John in Chapter 4 which records the longest conversation the Lord has with anyone in the Bible.
In John, Chapter 3 the Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated how to evangelize to a prominent citizen...a person who thinks his credentials make him “all that.”
In John, Chapter 4, the Lord evangelizes to a “nobody” … a Samaritan woman … a person who is not considered special by anyone except the Lord.
John, Chapter 4 is an interesting lesson in what our evangelism will be like most of the time. We’ll be sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with common folk who may not know a thing about the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord shows us how.
Let’s hear the first part of this conversation between the Lord Jesus Christ and a common woman of Samaria in John, Chapter 4, Verses 1 to 14…
JOHN 4:1 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John…
JOHN 4:2 …(although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were)…
JOHN 4:3 …He left Judea and went away again into Galilee.
JOHN 4:4 And He had to pass through Samaria.
JOHN 4:5 So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar (SIGH-CAR) near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph…
JOHN 4:6 …and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
JOHN 4:7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
JOHN 4:8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
JOHN 4:9 Therefore, the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
JOHN 4:10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
JOHN 4:11 She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep…where then do You get that living water?”
JOHN 4:12 “You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?”
JOHN 4:13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again…”
JOHN 4:14 “…but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst…but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”
Let’s study the passage verse-by-verse to see what there is to learn. The passage has structure, and it can be viewed in two parts:
Verses one to six are an introduction to the scene. These verses make us aware of the transition the Lord is making from the conversation with Nicodemus to the conversation with the Samaritan woman.
Verses seven to fourteen begin the conversation with the Samaritan woman and introduce the way the Lord Jesus Christ chooses to evangelize to a people the world thinks are not so special.
John, Chapter 4, Verse 1…
JOHN 4:1 Therefore, when the Lord Jesus Christ knew the Pharisees had heard that He was baptizing more disciples than John the Baptist…
John the Baptist was the center of things in the first two chapters of the Gospel of John. He was the Lord’s messenger, introducing a lost and dying world to the Savior of the Universe. Once the Lord is introduced, John the Baptist steps aside even though he continues to baptize. John, Chapter 4, Verse 2 says in truth…
JOHN 4:2 …(although Jesus Himself was not baptizing…His disciples were)…
Now that John the Baptist is stepping aside, Jesus’ earthly ministry is taking off. At first, the Pharisees were worried about John the Baptist. Now they are worried about Jesus. So Jesus wisely departs from the area. John, Chapter 4, Verse 3…
JOHN 4:3 …so Jesus left Judea and went away to Galilee.
Let’s take a look at a map of Israel at the time of Jesus.
When we look at a map of Israel during Jesus’ day, we see three regions as we follow along the coast of Israel from south to north where it borders the Mediterranean Sea.
The southern-most region is Judea, where Jerusalem and Bethlehem are located. Bethlehem is the birthplace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and it is located in modern day Palestine. Jerusalem is where the most important Pharisees were concentrated and it was always a trouble spot for Jesus. When the Lord wanted to turn down the pressure He got out of Jerusalem.
Above Judea, in the middle region along Israel’s coastline, is Samaria. The city where Jesus meets the Samaritan woman is called Sychar (SIGH-CAR).
The northern-most region along Israel’s coastline is Galilee. In Galilee there are cities such as Capernaum, where Jesus had a home…Cana, where Jesus performed His first miracle…Nazareth, the childhood hometown of Jesus…Magdala, where Mary Magdalene was from (she was Mary of Magdala, a loyal follower of Jesus and one of the first to witness His resurrection from the dead)…Bethsaida, where Jesus found his first apostles…and the Sea of Galilee where Jesus walked on the water.
It’s an eighty-mile journey on foot from Judea to Galilee, and it takes about five days. As we read the Bible from our modern day context, it’s almost impossible to believe that most travel in Jesus’ day was done on foot. Jesus left Judea because the Pharisees were getting too interested in Him. As He said to His mother in John, Chapter 2, it was not His time. By saying, “It’s not My time,” Jesus means it is not time to go through the persecutions that would lead Him to the Cross.
John, Chapter 4, Verse 4…
JOHN 4:4 On the journey to Galilee, Jesus had to pass through Samaria.
There are two routes from Judea to Samaria. Jesus took the direct route because He had a divine appointment with the Samaritan woman. The Savior of the world cares about a single “insignificant” person, and arranges His journey to meet her.
The Jews looked down on the Samaritans. The Samaritans were “half-breeds” … they were Judeo-Gentiles of Semitic origin…part Jewish and part Samaritan. When armies conquer a land, they rape the women to remove the ethnic purity of the race (Example: The Japanese with the Chinese). This was likely the activity that brought about the Samaritans.
Racial intermarrying makes people who may be Christian deal with pagan gods. For example, Jews and Christians who marry today often end up bringing the kids up in both traditions. Judaism in not Christianity, and couples who do this offer their children a salvation problem.
Many legalistic Jews wouldn’t step foot in Samaria for fear they would be defiled by interacting with Samaritans. So when they traveled to up Galilee or down to Judea, they took a route that bypassed Samaria.
The Samaritans studied only the first five books of the Old Testament (the Jewish Torah…the books written by Moses), but they corrupted these books to serve their own purposes and to honor their own gods.
The Samaritans didn’t recognize any of the prophets. They didn’t recognize the Temple in Jerusalem. In fact, they built a rival temple at Mount Gerizim, the holiest site in Samaritan tradition.
John, Chapter 4, Verse 5…
JOHN 4:5 So Jesus came to a city of Samaria called Sychar (SIGH-CAR) near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph…
Jesus wanted everyone to hear about Him, not just Jews. His divine appointment with the Samaritan woman was evidence of Jesus’ “whosoever” philosophy. Also, it was probably an early lesson to His apostles about their upcoming evangelism to the Gentiles.
John, Chapter 4, Verse 6…
JOHN 4:6 …and Jacob’s well was there (in Samaria). So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting by the well. It was about the sixth hour (NOON).
The well is still there today. Sychar was a rest station on the way to Galilee. So Jesus and His disciples took a break in the city. Jesus was weary from the journey because He is human. Noon is one of the hottest parts of the day, so it was quite natural that Jesus might be thirsty after a long walk. It was good time to stop for a drink.
When we return from the break, we’ll request an offering and then we’ll look at the second part of this passage which begins Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman.

OFFERING INTRODUCTION
God the Father GIVES. Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 31 and 32…
ROMANS 8:31b If God the Father is for us believers in Christ, and He is, who is ever going to be successful in opposition against us?
ROMANS 8:32 God the Father…who (amid His feelings of WRATH toward those who are spiritually dead) did not spare His own Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) … but delivered Him over for us all…how will God the Father…now that we are in union with Christ…not also freely give us all things?
Since God the Father is willing to give, let’s not be conflicted about giving. Be generous with the financial gifts the Lord has given you. You’ll be supporting Barah Ministries, which is God’s ministry, so we can provide the Word of God and the gospel message free of charge to people all over the world who need to hear about the Lord.
Let’s listen to Deacon Denny Goodall offer us excellent wisdom about giving.

TODAY’S BIBLE LESSON In the Matter of Your Salvation, God is Fair
LESSON PART TWO
Welcome back!
Let’s continue our study of John, Chapter 4 at Verse 7… JOHN 4:7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water from Jacob’s well. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
Jesus was breaking protocol. He was Jew talking to a Samaritan, which rarely, if ever, happened. In addition, He was a man talking to an unaccompanied woman which was quite taboo in the culture. It is still taboo in certain cultures today, like with Muslims. John, Chapter 4, Verse 8…
JOHN 4:8 For Jesus’ disciples had gone away into the city (of Sychar) to buy food.
The Lord’s disciples may have passed the Samaritan woman on their way to the market. And they may have mistreated her if they met her. John, Chapter 4, Verse 9…
JOHN 4:9 Therefore, the Samaritan woman said to Jesus, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
The woman knew of the feud between the Jews and the Samaritans. There was heavy hostility. In Jesus, she saw a thirsty traveler, but more importantly she saw a male Jew. She was perplexed as to why He might be talking to her.
Jesus answered her in the way He answers people. He ignored the inquiry and got right to the point. John, Chapter 4, Verse 10…
JOHN 4:10 Jesus said, “If you knew the gift of God the Father…and if you knew who it is that says to you, ‘Give Me a drink’ … you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
Jesus starts to introduce Himself to her because she did not know who Jesus is, much like many unbelievers. He wanted to pique her curiosity. He used drinkable water to introduce her to the spiritual water she requires for salvation. The Samaritan woman did not understand what Jesus meant by “living water,” just as Nicodemus did not understand Jesus’s comment about the need to be “born again.”
Jesus is more than a thirsty Jewish traveler. The “who it is who says to you” Jesus refers to in Verse 10 is Himself…The Great I AM…Jesus…the Christ…the prophesied Jewish Messiah. She had no idea to whom she was speaking.
The “gift of God the Father” is salvation. Spiritual, living water is greater than the water that satisfies our physical body’s thirst. Living water offers salvation. It quenches our spiritual thirst. Jesus is opening her eyes to who He is one step at a time. John, Chapter 4, Verse 11…
JOHN 4:11 She said to Jesus, “Sir, You have nothing to draw water with…and the well is deep…where then do You get this living water?”
When the Samaritan woman demonstrated her ignorance of spiritual things, Jesus didn’t chastise her like He did Nicodemus.
Nicodemus shouldn’t have been ignorant. He was a trained Pharisee. The Samaritan woman is genuinely ignorant. She doesn’t know what she doesn’t know.
Jesus had a different approach to evangelizing a Biblical expert (Nicodemus) than He had to a person who knows nothing (the Samaritan woman). Much like the modern-day Hindus, the Samaritans worshiped many gods.
Hinduism does not have a single fixed number of gods, and its theology blends monotheism and polytheism into the belief that a single supreme reality manifests in many forms. This introduces confusion to the simplicity and purity of a relationship with Christ.
When Jesus is talking about living water, He is talking about spiritual water…the water of the Word of God…the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Samaritan woman had not yet caught on. She was talking about physical water. Jesus uses a water analogy to get her attention.
Like all unbelievers, Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman are spiritually blind. First Corinthians, Chapter 2, Verse 14…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 2:14 But a natural man (an unbeliever) does not accept the things of the Holy Spirit of God…for spiritual things are foolishness to him…and he cannot understand spiritual things, because they are spiritually appraised.
The Samaritan woman is defensive about the well. John, Chapter 4, Verse 12…
JOHN 4:12 “You are not greater than our father Jacob who gave us the well, and drank of it himself along with his sons and his cattle, are You?”
Yes…Jesus is greater than Jacob…He is the Creator of the universe and He created Jacob…but she didn’t know that yet. The Samaritan woman’s “are You” question is curiosity. John, Chapter 4, Verse 13…
JOHN 4:13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water (in Jacob’s well) will thirst again…”
That REALLY got her attention! She was thinking, “Maybe I could have water that would keep me from coming to this well every day!” John, Chapter 4, Verse 14…
JOHN 4:14 “…but whosoever drinks of the water that I (the Lord Jesus Christ) will give him shall never thirst…but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water gushing up eternal life.”
Water from a spring rises up. It gushes. Water in a well just lays there. A spring cannot be kept from gushing up. So it is with the spiritual life. It gushes up inside of us all the time, begging us to take advantage of its provision.
The Samaritan woman’s greatest need was the thirst of her innermost being…her soul…a spiritual thirst. But she was focused on physical water.
Nicodemus thought Jesus was talking about physical birth. But Jesus was talking about spiritual birth.
Even though the Samaritan woman didn’t understand the idea of living, spiritual water, Jesus wasn’t rough on her. She was brought up in a religion that had corrupted the spiritual life. Jesus was less patient with Nicodemus. In fact, Jesus was critical of Nicodemus (you’re a teacher of Israel and you don’t understand?)
Jacob’s well had very refreshing water, yet it only quenched the thirst of the Samaritan woman’s body. The living water the Lord gives gushes eternal life.
Jesus was making the Samaritan woman aware of her deepest need…the need for a spiritual life…the need for salvation. It’s a need all of us have.
We’ll hear the rest of the conversation between the Lord and the Samaritan woman in our next lesson.
THE GOSPEL MESSAGE The Good News of Jesus Christ’s Salvation Offer to the Human Race
The closing moments of this lesson could be the ten most important minutes of your life. You’ll be introduced to the good news concerning how you can spend all eternity in heaven when you close your eyes in this life. We want you to know that…
GOD WANTS YOU! He Wants You to Make the Most Important Decision of Your Life
…and what He wants for you is that you make the most important decision of your life.
Even if you don’t believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, you matter to God. The Lord’s enemies matter to Him as much or more than His friends matter to Him. The Lord created you and He wants the best for you.
While sharing this truth with people I am often asked, “How do I get right with God?”
When we are born, we are not right with God. Everyone is born in a state of unrighteousness, physically alive and spiritually dead as ungodly, unrighteous unbelievers in God’s eyes. We were born sinners and we need a Savior.
It’s not our fault we were born this way, BUT IT IS OUR CIRCUMSTANCE. In First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verse 22 the Bible says…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:22a For all in union with Adam at physical birth (and that is every human being who comes to earth) are set to die the second death in the Lake of Fire…
To God’s enemy, Satan…the ruler of this world…you don’t matter at all. First Peter, Chapter 5, Verse 8 says…
FIRST PETER 5:8 Be of sober spirit…be on the alert! Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
You are the “someone” on Satan’s list. Satan does not want you to be right with God. He’s hasn’t been right with God since the day he declared God to be his enemy. Here’s what the Lord says about that fateful day when Satan voluntarily gave up his privileged position in the Lord’s kingdom...Ezekiel, Chapter 28, Verse 15…
EZEKIEL 28:15 “You (Satan) were blameless in your ways from the day you were created until unrighteousness was found in you.”
Satan wants followers. He doesn’t want you to be with God in heaven when you close your eyes in this life. He wants you to be with him in the Lake of Fire, and he wants you so badly he sends false teachers with false teachings to deceive you. In Matthew, Chapter 7, Verse 15 the Lord warns us about this…
MATTHEW 7:15 “Beware of the false teachers…who come to you in sheep’s clothing…but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”
A ravenous animal has an insatiable desire to tear you apart. Ravenous teachers pretend to be for you, yet they want you to be twice the sons of hell that they are.
This gospel message offers GOOD NEWS concerning how to get right with God. John, Chapter 3, Verses 16 and 17 reveal what God wants for you…
JOHN 3:16 “God the Father loved the world unconditionally and so much that He gave His uniquely born Son (the God-man…the Lord Jesus…to be crucified on a Cross) … so that WHOSOEVER believes in Him shall not perish, but has eternal life.”
JOHN 3:17 For God the Father did not send God the Son (the Lord) into the world to judge the world…but the Father sent the Son into the world that the world might be saved through Him.
God wants you to respond positively to the good news of this Gospel of Jesus Christ so you can be right with Him.
Who is this God who saves you? The apostle Paul describes the Lord Jesus Christ in First Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 3 and 4…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:3 For I (the apostle Paul) delivered to all of you as of primary importance the gospel message I also received from God…that it was Jesus Christ who died for our sins according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:4 …and that He was buried…and that He was raised from the dead on the third day…according to the Old Testament Scriptures…
Getting right with God is easy. There is no work involved. Anyone who says you have work to get right with God is a false teacher giving you a false gospel message. Romans, Chapter 11, Verse 6 says you don’t have to work to be saved…
ROMANS 11:6 …if salvation is by grace (a free gift from God) … and of course it is…it is no longer on the basis of your works…otherwise, grace (as a free gift) is no longer grace (it is not free).
Romans, Chapter 4, Verse 4 says you CAN'T work for salvation…
ROMANS 4:4 Now to the one who works for salvation, his wage for his work is not credited to his account as a favor from the grace of God, but his wage is credited as what is due for the work.
Your hardest work is not perfect enough to get you right with God. So relax! You can get to heaven free of charge and free of work when you close your eyes in this life. Acts, Chapter 16, Verse 31 says…
ACTS 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved by God, you and everyone in your household who also believes.”
John, Chapter 3, Verse 36 both warns you and invites you…
JOHN 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has the resurrection life right at that moment…but he who does not obey the command to believe in the Son will not see the resurrection life…instead the wrath of God (the Lake of Fire) abides on him.”
You have a choice.
You can spend eternity with God’s enemy, Satan, in the Lake of Fire…OR…you can have the free gift of eternal life right this minute! RIGHT WHERE YOU SIT, RIGHT NOW, RIGHT THIS MOMENT God can make you right with Him. You can tell God the Father that you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and that is the moment of eternal life for you.
Romans, Chapter 10, Verses 9 and 10 encourages you…
ROMANS 10:9 …if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord (that He is God) … and if you believe in your heart that God the Father raised Him from the dead…you will be saved…
ROMANS 10:10 …for with the heart a person believes…resulting in the imputation of absolute righteousness by God (your admission ticket to heaven) … and with the mouth a person confesses (admitting faith in Christ alone) resulting in salvation.
You are right with God the moment He gifts you with His salvation and His righteousness. There is a consequence for rejecting the salvation and the righteousness gift from the Lord Jesus Christ. In Matthew, Chapter 8, Verse 12 the Lord says…
MATTHEW 8:12 “…the sons of (Satan’s) kingdom…(unbelievers)…will be cast out into the outer darkness (The Lake of Fire)…and in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Many parents are false teachers leading their children to an eternity in the Lake of Fire. Do you want to know if you’re a good parent? Just ask yourself a simple question. Are you influencing your children to get right with God by having a relationship with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Sovereign God of the Universe?
He is the ONLY WAY to get to heaven according to John, Chapter 14, Verse 6…
JOHN 14:6 Jesus said to the doubting apostle, Thomas, “I am the way (to salvation)…and I am the truth (through the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Word of God)…and I am the resurrection life…and no one comes to God the Father in heaven but through believing in Me.”
You are either right with God or you aren’t.
There’s no time to waste! GOD WANTS YOU. If you want to be right with God, simply believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved! Take His word for it concerning what it takes to be saved, and the resurrection life is yours free of charge! You’ll be right with God for all eternity.
